In some rather sad news this week, actor Brad Renfro was found dead last Tuesday in his LA apartment. He was 25, born 3 days before I was.
Renfro started his Hollywood career at the tender age of 11, playing a disturbed witness of a mafia lawyer’s death in the John Grisham adaptation The Client, alongside Susan Sarandon. Despite the film receiving mediocre reviews, his performance was generally acclaimed. Renfro went on to play a young Brad Pitt in Sleepers, and deliver another strong performance in Apt Pupil, as the young lad who discovers his neighbour (Ian McKellen) is a Nazi in hiding.
Sadly, Renfro’s career went into decline. The actor was caught on several occasions possessing drugs, most recently heroin, as well as committing some other crimes including violating his own parole. In the last few years, he also had some minor roles in films such as Ghost World and The Jacket, as well as being heavily involved in Larry Clarke’s gritty teen drama Bully. His last role will be in the forthcoming adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s The Informers.
While Renfro’s cause of death is currently unknown, it is more than likely drug-related.
