Remember when I talked about that movie, Death Warrior, where I discussed how cage fighters probably don’t make good actors or film writers?

This time, with Wrong Side of Town, we get to revisit that theory.  The key difference this time is that Wrong Side of Town’s headliner, David Bautista, and cohort Rob Van Dam, limit themselves to just acting, letting others handle the writing and direction duties.

The plot is actually pretty simple, and it’s the kind of thing we’ve seen literally dozens of times before–a former Navy Seal defends his wife against a nightclub owner’s brother, who accidentally dies in the fight when the brother falls on his own knife.  And in basically being present at the killing, the Seal unleashes a whole host of criminal types who want him dead.  It sure didn’t help things for the Seal that the nightclub owner’s brother put a price on his head.  So now, the Seal’s got to get out from under the death sentence and save what’s left of his family in the process.

The up shot about a movie like this is that you know the fight sequences are going to be pretty sweet.  That’s not so hard to believe considering that David Bautista has made a career around fighting.

The down shot, of course, is that this movie isn’t really long on plot.  It’s great for fights, and that’s also its big problem.  Wrong Side of Town watches like nothing so much as a series of vaguely interrelated fight scenes connected by the most tenuous threads of a plot skimpier than the clothes of the strippers in one scene.

There are only two questions you need to ask to determine how much you’ll like Wrong Side of Town: 1. Do I like watching guys beat the hell out of each other? and 2. Do I care that they’ll do this beating for precious little in the way of reason?

Once you figure out those two points, you’ll know how much you’ll like this one.  And the Screenhead Ten Scale knows a deeply niche product when it sees it and hands Wrong Side of Town a five out of ten.  It’s not a particularly bad movie, it’s just not much of a movie at all.
