The first promo photo of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in the upcoming film about the teeth-gnashing, claw-busting mutant superhero has been released through Empire magazine.

As you can see, the photo basically shows Jackman wearing the trademark wifebeater from the X-Men movies, brandishing his shinier-than-usual claws. The movie leads up to the events of X-Men, telling the story of the hero’s past, his relationship with Victor Creed and more.

Wolverine is set to open on May 1, 2009. It is being directed by Gavin Hood and co-stars Ryan Renolds, Will.i.am and Liev Schreiber.
