Winner — Goodbye Solo

Goodbye_Solo_ BoxArtAnne Taylor (42) is the winner — We hope you enjoy the movie!

Goodbye Solo won International Critics Prize at the 2008 Venice Film Festival. It’s a thought provoking movie that leans on immortality and responsibility.

The story is about two very different men from very different cultures, they meet and become friends.  The men embark on a journey of self-discovery that changes them forever.

I spoke with Award Winning Director Ramin Bahrani about his movie Goodbye Solo, which was filmed in North Carolina.  He mentioned the need to make simple movies that tell a story about life with a strong message. Yet, he’s not pedantic about his message. He doesn’t explain everything in his movies. He wants his audience to come to their own conclusions. With the subject matter of Goodbye Solo(no spoilers here), I can understand his position.

We also talked briefly about tent-pole films, making the big money makers. Bahrani has no aspirations to direct big movies that cost millions and millions of dollars to produce. He feels the message gets lost in a huge production because it’s more about making money not about creating a worthwhile story.  He doesn’t agree with spending large sums of money just to create entertainment or social conscious movies.  On the other hand, he wouldn’t mind working with big name stars on a simple story that offers a message that engages an audience.
