It’s true–that one name evokes more feeling in everybody all around the world than any other ever known.

Just say the name “Jesus Christ” and chances are you’ve got a picture in your mind.  But what is that picture?  And how close is it to the real picture?  That’s what today’s review target, Who Was Jesus?, is going to look at.  The folks out at Discovery sent me a copy of this, and today, we’re going to take a look at this movie which discusses Jesus’s childhood, surroundings and message.

Even if you’re not a practicing Christian, you’ll get a whole lot out of this video, which seeks to provide an accurate depiction of the times in which the young Jesus grew up.  It’s a world of brutality and disease, and yet at the same time, hope and love.  It’s a strange world, a downright frightening one sometimes, and even amazing at others.

The sheer variety of things to learn here is just astounding–I had no idea that wealthy Jewish families would use Roman building and decorating styles in their own houses.

Naturally no one will agree with all of this, and a good chunk of it is conjectural (Boondocks fans will already be familiar with Black Jesus, and that’s actually somewhat unlikely as it’s more likely Jesus would be olive-skinned or Mediterranean in color.) , but no matter how much of it you agree with, or disagree with, two things are clear.  You’re likely to learn something, and something here will likely make you think.

And it’s not just people and places, either–there’s a lot in here about the politics of the day, and how relationships were formed between the church and the Roman conquerors.

The Screenhead Ten Scale loves the sheer detail brought to play here, and approves of the overall presentation, thus giving it an eight out of ten.  It’s a terrific documentary, easy to follow and easy to learn from.
