WB Says “Sweeney Todd” is Too GruesomeAugust 27th, 2007 in Directors, Movie News, horror |
Tim Burton. Hear that name, and you’ll likely think of any number of his dark, disturbing, and gruesome films. It doesn’t need to be even said that if you sign on Burton, this is the kind of film you’re likely to end up getting. Nevertheless, Warner Brothers is now asking Tim Burton to water down his film adaptation of the murder musical Sweeney Todd, starring Johnny Depp.
According to the Daily Mail, WB is pressuring Burton to make massive cuts to the film so that it can receive a PG-13 rating:
“The thing is, the studio really likes the film and they want to make it accessible to as big an audience as possible - which means stemming the blood flow. But that’s a bit difficult for a story involving a guy who gets high slitting throats.” — Daily Mail
In true Hollywood fashion, the studio is more concerned about how much money they can rake in than the artistic vision of the film and its director. If they didn’t want it to be too bloody and horrific, they should have given the job to someone else instead of Burton. I, for one, hope that the studio doesn’t succeed in ruining what could be a great film.
