Now, this may not be much news to anyone who hasn’t read the Watchmen graphic novel, but to anyone that has…
It has been confirmed that the “Tales of the Black Freighter” story that is read throughout the events of the Watchmen story will indeed be made. Actor Gerard Butler spoke to Empire magazine about voicing the tale: “they’re going to do it in the style of a Japanese anime”.
That’s pretty good news for fans of the comic. The tale is actually a comic within the Watchmen comic, and concerns an increasingly deranged captain who chases after a phantom pirate ship he believes is on route to pillage his home-town.
This tale will not be part of the Watchmen film itself, as it does not directly relate to the principal actions of the story. In the original comics, it acted as a way of charting, and thus commenting on, one of the primary character’s decisions and reasoning throughout the main plot. While it will be nice to see it included in some form, this also indicates how difficult it will be to successfully adapt the graphic novel into a 2 hour film. The comic is made up of side-stories, back-stories, flashbacks, and metanarratives. And director Zack Synder’s last film, 300, barely had one story in total.
