Last week the Comic Con convention in San Diego had two special announcements, one regarding a monumental TV show, and one on an iconic movie. To cut to the chase, Special DVD boxsets of both Twin Peaks and Blade Runner were confirmed.
Last month I reviewed Season 2 of Twin Peaks, finding the set enjoyable except for its weak extras. Well, this seems to have been amended with the confirmation of the Definitive Gold Edition of this series, out on October 30. This whopping 10-disc set will include every episode of the entire series, including both versions of the feature-length pilot (which was previously unavailable in the USA). But what makes the disc so special is its extra features. Discs 9 and 10 will finally feature the show’s creator, David Lynch, discussing the show in the company of lead actor Kyle MacLachlan, as well as extensive featurettes concerning the creation of the show. This is far superior to the flimsy interviews that were squeezed into the original releases. It’s only a pity I wasted my money on buying the originals in the first place.
Last month, I also reported on rumours of a definitive DVD (and Blu-Ray/HDDVD) release of Blade Runner. Such an important movie deserves plenty of supplemantary material, and finally Warner have outdone themselves with this announcement. We will get 3 different boxsets of the movie, all depending on your interest in the film. First up is a 2 disc Special Edition, which consists of Ridley Scott’s new cut of the film (due for a theatrical release in October), and a meaty documentary covering all aspects of the film, from concept to reception. If it’s anywhere as good as the Alien documentary, it’ll be worth every cent. But if you want more, there’s a 4-disc Collector’s Edition which has everything the Special Edition has, but includes the three original cuts of the film (US 1982 version, international 1982 version, and the far superior 1992 Director’s Cut), and another disc of extras, including some impressive and eye-opening deleted scenes, and featurettes on PK Dick’s original novel and the legacy of the film. And finally, if you’re not satisfied with that, there’s a 5-disc Collector’s Edition, which includes an extra disc of the rumoured Workprint version of the film, with a limited box set including models and photos, to impress your nerd friends. All of these DVD versions will get a release on December 18th. My letter to Santa has already been sent.
