Tom Swift adventure novels have been imagined for the big screen since the late 1960’s when Gene Kelly almost tom_swift_cover_1939_unreneweddirected the film as a musical.  A Swift movie was even planned in the 1970’s but never made it to production. It looks like Columbia Pictures is committed to bring the boy genius to the big screen from a pitch by Barry Sonnenfeld and Ben David Grabinski.  Swift is described as a reimagining of the Tom Swift adventure novels.  Sonnenfeld will direct.

As a history lesson according to Variety, the Tom Swift character first appeared in a series of books that launched in 1910. The original books were outlined by Edward Stratemeyer, written by ghostwriters and credited to pseudonym Victor Appleton.

Sonnenfeld and Grabinski’s version would feature Swift as one-half of a father-son team who are among the greatest inventors of all time.
