The Wicker Man DVD Review: Not even Nicolas Cage can ruin this one.December 19th, 2006 in Dvd, Reviews |
For once, a Nicolas Cage movie actually entertained me. Too bad it wasn’t him that impressed me.
I happened to catch the remake of The Wicker Man the other night. I have never seen the original and I don’t really plan to, even though it’s probably better. The originals always are (i.e. The Omen, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Carrie). I think watching the original would more than likely ruin my opinion of the remake, which I felt was pretty good.
The Wicker Man stars Nic Cage as a cop from California who receives a mysterious letter authored by a woman from his past about her missing daughter. He travels to a small island in Washington (of all places) to help find her and discovers that a missing child is only the beginning of his problems. This place is insane. It’s inhabited with a cult-like community of women that make any fantasy I’ve ever had about such a place completely disappear. Think of the Amish, but creepier and without those cool beards and hats. It was interesting to experience to say the least. It’s hard to believe such a place could exist within a hundred miles of Microsoft HQ.
Even though I hate every movie Nicolas Cage has ever done (except Lord Of War), I do actually recommend this movie. It’s odd and creepy enough to overshadow his bad acting. Plus, it wasn’t at all predictable, unless you’ve seen the original, obviously. The Wicker Man is entertaining, easy to follow, and ultimately a decent movie.
