The Passion Of The Prequel
January 23rd, 2007 in Movies
MGM are going to ignore the semi-spectacular failure of The Nativity Story and try to repeat the success of The Passion Of The Christ with, wait for it… Myriam, Mother Of The Christ. You thought her name was Mary? Me too, but it’s probably some Aramaic translation type thing.
MGM were the studio that put out Mel Gibson’s boxofficetastic religious torture-fest, and they’ve got a screenplay by Benedict Fitzgerald, who co-wrote that film. It’s got a similar title, which is obviously no accident, and plans for a similar release date (even though Easter 2008 is the logically opposite release date for a film about the birth of Jesus) but will that guarantee similar returns?
One thing that hopefully won’t be similar is the format, unless Fitzgerald repeats Gibson’s structure and has Mary, sorry Myriam, in painful labor for two hours plus with intermittent flashbacks of her journey to Bethlehem. But much as I disliked Gibson’s film I never felt Mel’s epic was all about a cynical money grab as no one could have predicted The Passion’s box office. This on the other hand…
