This film has ‘date movie’ written all over it. Literally. Someone wrote DATE MOVIE all over my copy. It really bothered me.

The Last Kiss is the tale of Michael (Zach Braff), a man hitting his mid-life crisis an entire decade too early. He realizes he has the perfect job, the perfect pregnant wife, and everything is just as he thought it would be at his age. In other words, he’s bored out of his mind. As he wonders if his life is all that its ever going to be, he finds himself discovering excitement outside his closed circle of a life in a young student at the local college. His life is ultimately put back in perspective.

Braff plays the emo-hipster role like he was born to do it. You feel his pain while you envy his life no matter how much he loathes it. He surrounds himself with three close friends that are going through their own life-changing ordeals that make his problems seem sometimes trivial and other times serious. One of which is in an unhappy marriage, another is suffering from heartbreak, and the third is having what he believes is the time of his life. These sub-plots add a great deal of contrast and surrealism to Michael’s situation.

This is an excellent movie, even though I’m morally against cliché ‘date movies’. All these movies do is make one person (if not both) in the relationship compare and criticize their own situation. “I would never forgive you if you cheated on me.” “How come we never -insert something fun here-?” “All guys/girls are the same.” At the conclusion to these redundant films, a couple either feels closer to each other or they become temporarily unsure about their relationship and end up having a “where is this going” talk. But don’t let all my bitterness deter you. I highly recommend renting this movie.
