The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test

Tom Wolfe’s hallucinogenic book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, is finally headed for the big screen nearly 40 years after its original publication. The book told the story of a cross-country road trip orchestrated by Ken Kesey, the author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and a group called the Merry Pranksters.
In true 60’s fashion, the group drove a psychedelically painted bus from California all the way to the 1964 World’s Fair in New York. Kesey and his travelling buddies used the trip as a way to turn on those they met to the mind-expanding wonders of LSD.
The movie will mainly focus on Kesey, and include some events that occurred after the road trip. Interestingly, Kesey wrote One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest while he was on the hallucinogen, and credits LSD for many of the ideas in the book.
Gas Van Sant has signed on to direct the film, and the script will be written by Lance Black (HBO’s Big Love).

It’s nonfiction, ergo, not a novel….
