As of right now, I really hate Meryl Streep. Because of that, I know she’s an outstanding actress.
The Devil Wears Prada is a smart movie that is based on an even smarter and insanely popular book. Actually, I assume it is a smart book because every woman I know (and one guy) has read this book and felt it was necessary to share their opinions with me. The book is right up there with The Bible and The Da Vinci Code for books that everyone else has read except me. But I digress.
The Devil… gives us a peak at a life-altering year for a bright-eyed young college graduate (Andy, played by Anne Hathaway) who learns a few things about getting ahead in the world of fashion journalism. We watch her take on an assistant job from hell and having to take orders from an unusually cold-hearted witch of a boss played by Meryl Streep. She learns success takes sacrifice and compromise at the expense of the people closest to you, whether you work at Wal-Mart or Wall Street. It’s something we all learn at some point, but it’s more fun to see someone else suffer than think about or own experiences.
For someone who doesn’t care about fashion and enjoys the company of women, I really enjoyed this movie. I genuinely felt for Andy as she cried about this and stressed about that. It reminded me of my own moments of…well, actually I couldn’t relate to her at all, but I still liked it. I’ve come to the conclusion that The Devil Wears Prada is a movie for women with jobs they hate and guys who swear they’re only watching it for Anne Hathaway.
Rent it. Enjoy it. You may at least get some fashion tips.
