I haven’t heard of this movie before. It’s based on the character created by Robert E. Howard (creator of Conan the Barbarian), Captain Solomon Kane is a brutally efficient 16th Century killing machine. Armed with his signature pistols, cutlass and rapier, he and his men unleash their bloodlust as they fight for England in war after war on all continents.
Starring British actor James Purefoy (The Philanthropist, Rome, Vanity Fair) and directed and written by Michael J. Bassett, the film will be screened as part of the Toronto International Film Festivals Midnight Madness line-up on Wednesday, September 16.
With Solomon Kane,Conan and his other heroes, iconic American writer Robert E. Howard created the genre now known as “SWORD & SORCERY,” in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
Winner of the 2008 Toronto Film Festival People’s Choice Award, Slumdog Millionaire is the story of Jamal Malik (Patel), an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life.
With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India¹s “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”
But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika (Pinto), the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show’s questions.
Intrigued by Jamal’s story, the jaded Police Inspector begins to wonder what a young man with no apparent desire for riches is really doing on this game show. The new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out.
Slumdog Millionaire will now open Wednesday, November 12th — a week earlier than originally planned.
The Blindness new trailer tells you more about the story. I am captivated and want to see the movie. Here are a few review quotes that have recently been published: “Julianne Moore is brilliant in the lead role, a smart woman who figures out quickly that her secret is a commodity, but something she can use for a greater good.” — Incontention.com “The film received a fairly prolonged standing ovation at last night’s screening,…” — Cinematical
“The Canadians played a part of such distinction that thenceforward they were marked out as storm troops; for the remainder of the war they were brought along to head the assault in one great battle after another. Whenever the Germans found the Canadian Corps coming into the line they prepared for the worst.”
~British Prime Minister Lloyd George 1916-1922, After the Battle of the Somme.
