world war 2 aircraftThere are things that you’d never imagine going together in life.

Tom Cruise and John Woo is easily one of them.  But when you consider John Woo’s newest project announcement, a movie about a little known side of World War II, in which the Americans helped the Chinese.  Check out what Woo said in a recent interview:

“It’s based on a true story in WWII, about a group of American volunteer fighter pilots who worked with the Chinese Air Force fighting with the Japanese and they won the war. Also, it’s the story of Clair Chennault, and they did a great contribution for the Chinese, and the Chinese people love and respect them. The whole story is about a friendship between a Chinese and an American and they worked together.”

That’s not something you’d expect to go together either–the Chinese and the Americans.  Especially not lately!  But is this story going to be too obscure for World War II buffs?  Or will it be a shot in the arm for Cruise’s career, currently flagging under a weight of Scientology and insanity?

I bet Tom Cruise is one proud father because his son, Connor, secured a role in the remake of Red Dawn. Entertainment Weekly exclusively reveals four new members of the cast of the 2010 remake of Red Dawn: Josh Hutcherson (Journey to the Center of the Earth) in the role originated by C. Thomas Howell; Isabel Lucas (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) in the role originated by Lea Thompson; Edwin Hodge (Fox’s “Mental”) in the role originated by Brad Savage; and Connor Cruise (Seven Pounds) in the role originated by Darrne Dalton.

sam-worthingtonI find it fascinating how the development of movies progress or digress as actors, directors and writers attached themselves and unattached themselves from the projects.

An interesting progression is the development of Tourist, Charlize Theron and Sam Worthington are the final top actors to play the key roles in the film to be directed by Bharat Nalluri.

If you have been following the movie’s development, you would have known that Tom Cruise was once attached.  Now, Thereon, who has been with the project for quite some time has another good looking actor.  Worthington last starred in Terminator Salvation and next in James Cameron’s Avatar.  He is even working on Clash of the Titans right now.

Where did Cruise go?  He’s moved on to an untitled project with James Mangold at Fox.

Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams agreed to produce Mission: Impossible IV together at Paramount for a 2011 release.

That means Cruise and Paramount both are working together again.  According to Variety, Summer Redstone, big studio head, says Cruise is “a great actor and a good friend.”

The Mission sequel adds to Paramount’s assortment of sequels, which includes Star Trek 2 and Transformers. 3

The reteaming may slow down some other projects of Abrams and Cruise.  Abrams is responsible for steering the Star Trek sequel, while Cruise recently committed to an untitled movie (formerly called Wichita) for 20th Century Fox that will be directed by James Mangold and co-star Cameron Diaz.

84087810 Riding on the wave that is Star Trek, J.J. Abrams is now a lucrative director. While he might be sought for other big Hollywood franchises, he is currently set to produce the fourth Mission: Impossible film.

"I am incredibly honored that Tom [Cruise] has invited me back as a producer on ‘Mission: Impossible 4‘. Tom and I have come up with a really cool idea we are pursuing," said Abrams. He previously directed Mission: Impossible 3.

The M:I films have always been major blockbusters. While Abrams’ one was the least successful commercially, it still brought in just under $400 million worldwide, almost triple of its $150 million budget.

No other details on M: I-4 was given.

Looks like Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz picked the 20th Century Fox action comedy Wichita as their next star vehicle together, which is directed by James Mangold.  According to sources reported by Variety, Cruise and Diaz have approved the script, and their deals are in advanced negotiations. While Fox has not officially dated the picture, studio is hoping for a summer 2010 release.

The script has changed many times; still the recent renditions were penned by Scott Frank while Mangold is currenlty tweaking the script even more with Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island).

Cruise will play a secret agent who pops in and out of the life of a single woman (Diaz) hence several actions scenes are in the movie.

If you have been following my blogs,  you know that Cruise had a hand full of projects to choose from as his next starring movie: the Len Wiseman-directed DreamWorks thriller Motorcade; the Bharat Nalluri-directed Spyglass remake The Tourist; the David Cronenberg-directed MGM drama The Matarese Circle; the Universal/Working Title romantic comedy Lost for Words; and The 28th Amendment, the Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck-directed Warner Bros. thriller.

The selection process came down to Wichita and Motorcade.

valkyrieTom Cruise is a crazy, scary man.  If you read the tabloids long enough you’ll find scads of stories about him, his sheer lunacy, and the sheer lunacy that applies to his dealings with Scientology.  But one thing is true…he’s a pretty good actor. And when you run to the video store and grab a copy of Valkyrie, well, you’ll probably notice that yourself.

In Valkyrie, we’re introduced to a huge and incredibly convoluted plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler by elements within his own army.  The best part is, much of this actually happened.  Klaus von Stauffenberg (a real person, here played by Tom Cruise) is part of the military arm of the attempt to kill Hitler, using his own plans against him.  See, Hitler had a plan just in case someone should turn against him called Operation Valkyrie, in which a reserve contingent of the German army, dubbed the Reserve Army, was kept around Berlin in the event of an uprising to suppress civil insurrection.  So Stauffenberg and his contingent feign an uprising…on the part of Hitler’s own SS.  This allows them to enact Operation Valkyrie to seize the SS, and with both the Reserve Army and the SS removed from the equation, the path becomes clear to seize Hitler’s government.

The most amazing part of this entire exercise is that this actually happened, and essentially came within a gnat’s whisker of actually succeeding, which would have brought the war to an end quite a bit sooner than it actually did.  Frankly, with stuff like this going on, it’s a wonder Hitler’s regime managed to last as long as it did.  Watching this epic story of love of country and betrayal play out is downright amazing—even more so when you consider that Hitler would commit suicide just nine months after the events of Valkyrie.  It’s as though something was conceived that day that would be born as real as any man.

History aside, however, this is actually a very riveting movie, made doubly so by the fact that it has an unusually long runtime of a full two hours, in an era where eighty to ninety minutes is standard operating procedure.  It’s a stunning, deep and rich epic that makes its viewer sit up and take notice.  While most of us who haven’t studied World War II history extensively may not have known about Operation Valkyrie or the other fourteen assassination attempts on Hitler, this one carries an authenticity to it that makes it especially good.  These were men so concerned about the direction of their country that they were willing to surrender their status and their very lives to bring about its downfall and rebirth.

And though the Stauffenberg heirs didn’t personally care for Cruise’s portrayal of him, I confess that I liked it just fine.  If Tom Cruise would lay off the lunacy and do more acting like this, more people would take him much, MUCH, more seriously.

But that aside, Valkyrie is a great thriller / suspense title  and deserves your dollars and your time to watch.  It’s downright inspiring in its portrayal of resistance to a madman, and it looks as beautiful as the plot itself is deep.

Is the script doctor in?tom_cruise2

Tom Cruise is one of my favorite actors.  Waiting for one of his films to be released puts me on pins and needles.  So, I get excited, to say the least, when the trades start reporting Cruise’s next film.  The excitement is getting the best of me because there are several films Cruise has been working on with script doctors.

Here are the standings as I write this piece. Keep in mind I am bucking for The Matarese Circle because I truly feel that Denzel Washington, David Cronenberg and Tom Cruise formula makes a great film.  I’d love to see Cronenberg take on a topliner. His career is ready for this opportunity. Yet, I’d like to see Cruise star in a comedy.

This is what Variety says are the top choices for Cruise:  DreamWorks drama Motorcade, to be directed by Len Wiseman, followed by Spyglass remake The Tourist (with Charlize Theron), to be helmed by Bharat Nalluri, and Fox action comedy Wichita (with Cameron Diaz), which James Mangold will direct. Also still in the mix is MGM’s The Matarese Circle which potentially matches Cruise with Denzel Washington and helmer David Cronenberg.

Please note: Taking a screenplay to a script doctor is common practice in Hollywood.  Script doctors get paid a pretty dollar for their talent.

41J0TK0MVGL._SL160_AA160_ UK dirt-disher The Daily Express claims that Tom Cruise hopes to produce a remake of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Apparently, he is so into it that he has already started interviewing potential screenwriters for the project where he would play Sundance. The role was originally made famous by Robert Redford in the original 1969 western. The role of Cassidy is said to be taken on by John Travolta.

The article also indicates that Cruise has been wanting to make the film for years now and only recently obtained Paul Newman’s blessings before he passed.

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz are looking at pairing together in an untitled romantic comedy formerly known as tom_cruise2Wichita and Trouble Man with James Mangold is attached to direct.

Scott Frank is penning a rewrite.

The story follows a woman who has terrible luck with men but finds her path intertwined with a mysterious handsome man she meets on a blind date.

Cruise nor Diaz are officially attached, but the project is one of several films at various studios that Cruise is taking into consideration for his next star vehicle. Diaz just became attached to a romantic comedy called Swingles, as posted here.

Cruise and Diaz performed together in 2001’s Vanilla Sky.
