From IESB comes word that the character of Donald Blake has been added to the end of the script of the upcoming Thor film being penned by Kenneth Branagh. Up until now, the script was set entirely in the land of the Norse gods; however, the introduction of this character is important to how the film ties into the Avengers film which will be set in a contemporary setting.

The movie will see Blake discovering the magical Norse hammer Mjolnir and turning into Thor himself.

Thor is set to open in theaters July 2010, with The Avengers due out July 2011. Branagh is reported to have an acting part in the film.

McKidd Still in Line for Thor

Grey’s Anatomy star Kevin McKidd has told IGN that he is still a contender for the lead role in Thor, the upcoming big-screen adaptation of the comic book superhero.

He notes that casting wise nothing has been determined yet, but that there has been a “lot of back and forth”. McKidd is apparently excited about the fact that Kenneth Branagh is onboard as director.

Marvel has set a tentative start date for the project: July 16, 2010.

Daniel Craig as Thor? No

daniel-craig-bond-21 Did it ever occur to you that the current Bond just might play Thor one day? No? It didn’t come to me either, but Daniel Craig has revealed that Marvel Studios did indeed approach him to play the role of the Norse god in the upcoming comic book adaptation.

However, you won’t be seeing Craig in those flowing locks, sporting a large hammer. He has turned down the role, saying that it would be “too much a power trip” to play both Bond and Thor.

Quantum of Solace is the latest Bond film, and is the second Bond movie starring Craig.

Thor has a good chance of being directed by Kenneth Branagh as he negotiates with Marvel Studios to helm the project.

Billed as a heavy-action film, Thor is a type of project Branagh hasn’t doesn’t done for awhile since Henry V in 1989.

The story of Thor follows a disabled medical student Donald Blake with an alter ego, hammer-wielding Norse god Thor.

Caruso Doing Thor?

thor7var Marvel may have quite a few superhero films in the making, but so far it has failed to bring the Norse god Thor into the realm of cinema. With Matthew Vaughn leaving the project a while back, many have been speculating about who would take over the adaptation of the comic. Now, director D.J. Caruso reveals that he would be up for the gig… if Marvel wants.

“I would definitely tackle it,” he stated. “I know that they [Marvel] have a script, but there’s something, there’s a fear I have about Thor and depending on what Thor story you want to tell, whether you want to bring Thor into the modern world or if you want to go back to Asgard and get the history of what’s happening between him and his brother and dad. That’s one I’ve always been interested in and it also would be, it would be a monumental task so, I could definitely see myself getting myself into that.”

He might be up for it, but does Marvel want him for the job? “I have had some talks with Marvel about it but I have not seen a screenplay. It could be something that I am interested in.”
