A bad idea in the making, Bloody Disgusting reports that Dutch helmer Matthijs van Heijningen is tipped to be the director of the prequel to John Carpenter’s classic The Thing.

In development at Strike and Universal Pictures, the film will see the lead character’s shoes being filled by the brother of the original’s lead character R.J. Macready (Kurt Russell).

The original followed an American scientific expedition to the Antarctic being terrorized by an alien life-form that can take over bodies.

Penned by Ronal D. Moore, the prequel will offer the Norwegian camp’s point of view.

The Thing Prequel Update

i_thing The Thing is an absolute classic that must not be remade at all costs – while fans may believe so, movie execs are another breed. However, Universal’s remake of the film won’t be a remake at all, but a prequel.

This comes from Latino Review who spoke with producer Marc Abraham about the project. He reveals that the film’s narrative will “be taking place in the same time frame” and feature “the events leading up to the 1982 film.”

No update on the project itself was given, though. The latest (and all) we have is that Universal hired Ronald Moore to write a script.
