The Road is not the most upbeat story, but it has some dynamite actors such as Robert Duvall, Viggo Mortensen and Charlie Theron. The trailer reveals why the world is dying and captures how bleak and hopeless it all feels.  But many feel the film should be seen despite its depressing theme.

roadposterThe Road, as a movie, is a real downer, but it’s newest poster looks a little upbeat with the bright light behind the two main characters.   Now, I know the bright light is explosions, but still it offers a sense of hope.

The poster also promotes “based on the Pulitzer-prize winning novel” to give credibility to the movie.

The Road is being promoted as an epic post-apocalyptic tale of a journey taken by a father and his young son across a barren landscape that was blasted by an unnamed cataclysm that destroyed civilization and most life on earth.

This film clip from The Road is Robert Duvall at his best.  It’s also a lesson in acting for the camera.  Duvall does so much in this scene, yet it’s very subtle.

I know there are mixed feelings about this movie, but to see this scene is a treasure. Enjoy.

Eerie, foreboding story of a journey for survival best describes The Road Trailer.   I don’t know if I would want to sit through a movie like this unless it had some light moments. There is the moment with the son drinking the soda, but other than that it’s eerie. Yikes!

Where is Robert Duvall?

The Road a Viggo Mortensen dark thriller, directed by John Hillcoat, was scheduled for a Nov. 14 limited and Nov. 26 wide release.  But, quietly has been moved until hopefully December — and might be rescheduled out of 2008 entirely.

Apparently according to Hollywood Reporter, executives met with Road producers to discuss its current scheduling while Harvey Weinstein pushes for Stephen Daldry’s The Reader for December 10 release date.

Hillcoat’s movie was shot this year but is still in post and not done yet.

With the Oscar window closing for 2008, it’s no wonder that Weinstein Company wants Reader for 2008. The company feels Reader is a commercial and awards contender.

So, there may be less urgency to deliver Road before 2008.

The Road Pushed Back?

logo-weinstein Both EW and The Hollywood Reporter are reporting that the film adaptation of the post-apocalyptic thriller The Road may be pushed back to 2009. The film was originally slated for release next month, but Weinstein Co. has quietly pushed it to December; it may be further pushed back to 2009 depending on the outcome of a meeting about the release date plans scheduled for later today.

The film is currently in post-production, but is apparently not done according to sources on the film. The reason to get it out this year is because of the people involved – Viggo Mortensen and Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men). Many expected this to be an Oscar contender, though that remains to be seen.

Here’s some more good news for those of us with hopes for the adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s bleak novel The Road. In an interview with the LA Times, Nick Cave has spoken about his current project of scoring the movie.

Nick Cave (and his Bad Seeds) have been around for 25 years, writing music that pitches between paranoiac, frenzied delusions, and tragic, desperate ballads, with an occasional break (e.g. his new Grinderman group) to rock out. His lyrics are polished and literary. But he has also delved into soundtracks, including the beautiful laments of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Cave has also worked with The Road director, John Hillcoat, before, providing music for and scripting the nasty Oz Western The Proposition (which is currently being remade for Hollywood) and Ghosts… of the Civil Dead.

With Cave’s reliable tunes, and Hillcoat’s direction, which so far has displayed a habit of never relenting from the disturbing, not to mention the book having been penned by the man behind this year’s Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men, The Road is gearing up to be one of the highlights of the year.
