And today, the final installment of the Watchmen Video Journal comes our way with a look at the Minutemen, the progenitors of the Watchmen and the costumed vigilante movement.
What you have to understand, in case you weren’t a Watchmen reader, is that the Watchmen are not unique to the story’s continuity. Back in the 1940s, there was a group of costumed superheroes called the Minutemen. They did much the same things the Watchmen did in the more modern era, specifically running around in costumes and capturing bad guys.
It’s especially noteworthy to pay attention to the concept of “antiquated costume design methods” mentioned in the clip. There’s actually a segment where stars are manually ironed onto a cape, which is a downright reliquated method of costuming, but is oddly appropriate for costumes made in a 1940s setting. It’s just one more bullet point on that big list marked “attention to detail”, and you can count on that phrase being part of lots of reviews on this movie when it finally makes its emergence.
Watchmen and 300 director Zack Snyder launched cruelfilms.com, the website for his production company Cruel and Unusual Films, and has provided EW.com with this never-before-seen image from one of the opening scenes from Watchmen, which opens March 6. You have to go to EW.com to see the image.
The image, Snyder says, is one of the first glimpses audiences will have of the film’s anti-hero, Rorschach, as he shoots a grappling gun into the Comedian’s apartment while investigating his fallen comrade’s mysterious death. “We just wanted to have a place where people could see what we’re up to,” Snyder tells EW.com exclusively about the site. “As a company, we’re into a lot of cool stuff, like aesthetic and design. The movies we make, and are making, feed a lot off of pop-culture.”
Although the latest Watchmen trailer doesn’t give the whole storyline, it does tell you a little bit about the characters and tells you that someone wants to get rid of the superheroes to blow up the world.
Some angst is caked on with a love story while everything rivets on special effects of whomp ‘em, kick ‘em and blow ‘em finesse. I hope Zack Snyder makes the movie that fans want to see — the trailer doesn’t show that yet. The graphic novel has a very strong following. I hate to see him miss the chance.

Each interview I see of Zack Snyder, I like him more and more. Watching and listening to him in this interview about Watchmen women superheroes, I can sense how passionate and honest he is about the characters of this story.
