defianceI have to admit, there have not been a whole lot of World War 2 movies coming out these days.  I guess that whole “greatest generation” buzz just kinda wore off in the face of a depression that’s looking like it’ll make the thirties look like the nineties.  This is why I was actually pretty happy to find a copy of great war movie Defiance, featuring Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber.

Craig and Shreiber play the Bielski brothers, a pair of Jews who witnessed the complete destruction of their hometown at the hands of the Germans.  At least they looked like Germans–they seemed to be wearing the right uniform.  But anyway, following the slaughter of all they knew and loved, these simple farmers became freedom fighters, escaping into the woods around their houses, picking up strays as they went.  Eventually, the steadily growing collective built a camp in the woods with shelter for its residence, food storage and dispersal, and even fighting positions.  Sure, there was infighting and privation and sacrifice and everything else, but by and large, they got along well.  In fact, given the state of a lot of OTHER Jews in Europe at the time they were doing pretty nicely indeed.  But of course, this couldn’t last, and eventually the Germans grew tired of the Bielski group’s constant raids and sabotages and killing of German soldiery, so they launched all out war, eventually sending an entire division in a time when every man Hitler could muster was being either thrown at the Russians or at the Americans.

And I’ll be honest with you, this is a GREAT movie.  It’s got a huge runtime by today’s standards—just over two hours in fact—but you will almost barely notice it go by.  There is not a dull moment in this, whether they’re building their camp or blasting Nazis or running from same, there’s always something interesting going on here.

It’s a downright inspirational piece, as people in the midst of a horrible situation grapple with the very worst parts of their humanity, facing greed and rage and the craving for revenge, and yet at the same time, they also struggle to reaffirm their humanity in a time when they’re hunted like animals.

I love how this movie can switch so rapidly and so seamlessly between the most tender feelings humanity can muster for each other and the sheer blinding rage of hatred and warfare and bloodshead.  The dichotomy is just amazing, and watching this is like a blistering mix of themes and flavors all at once, that combines to make a whole far, far greater than the sum of its parts.

We need more movies like Defiance.  We need more characters willing to stand in the breach the way these characters do and willing to face down all the horrors that modern man can generate.  We need a little more uplifting in our movies…but just a little more.  It’s the kind of thing that’s so very easy to overdo.  Maybe Defiance didn’t, but it wouldn’t be hard for anyone else to do it.  It wouldn’t have been that hard for even Defiance itself to overdo it.  But it didn’t, and that’s the great news for all of us.

Basically, Defiance is an amazing movie with top-notch performances, a great cast, and a plotline so uplifting it’s a wonder there isn’t a hole in my ceiling right now just from watching this thing.  It’s definitely worth your time to see this.

Yes, yes, I know all the hype over the leaked Wolverine movie with all the speculation and assumption of pointing fingers and so forth.  But let’s continue to get excited about the opening day of the fierce, awesome and very much anticipated film, starring Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber. Jackman is a talented song and dance actor who takes the cake in Australia as muscle bound Drover. Schreiber is so versatile in range. I’ve enjoyed his work since first seeing him in Nicole Holofcener’s 1996 film Talking and Walking.

With that all being said, I like the French movie poster for X-Men Origins Wolverine opens May 1.

In a much better version of the trailer, Hugh Jackman plays Wolverine skillfully as a bad dude who is pumped. He’s awesome.  Liev Schreiber is an awesome as a vampire in this trailer too.

Wolverine Trailer

Not the best quality from YouTube, but the trailer shows some awesome shots of Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber.

I am excited about Liev Schreiber going crazy in the next Wolverine movie starring Hugh Jackman.  Some new pictures of X-Men Origins: Wolverine have been floating around the Internet. I picked this one up of Liev and Hugh. I like it.  I think Liev is going to hold his own.  Victor Creed is a great character for him and the audience will appreciate his work.

Richard Levine directs Every Daywith Live Schreiber, Helen Hunt and Carla Gugino, which is currently shooting in New York. Eddie Izzard and Brian Dennehy (a favorite of mine) recently joined the film.

Schreiber and Hunt play an unstable married couple in turmoil. Schrieber’s character is tempted by seductress, Gugino.  It’s not clear, yet, who Izzard plays, but Dennehy plays Hunt’s sick and embittered father who moves into their home.

It appears the film is a drama-comedy. I hope it works out that way.

Hugh Jackman looks pumped and angst.  From the looks of his bod, he must do interval training. I’d live to think he does kickboxing.  Sure he lifts to get those awesome arms; he’s not bulky, though.

Jackman is also on the cover of Empire Magazine. That’s where this photo originated.

If you pick up the next copy of Empire, you’ll get the lowdown on X-Men Origins: Wolverine: Hugh Jackman, director Gavin Hood, Liev Schreiber (who plays Victor Creed) and more.

Every Day begins filming in New York this month starring Live Schreiber and Helen Hunt.

Every Day is a drama written and to be directed by Richard Levine, his feature directing debut.

According to Variety, Schreiber and Hunt play a couple whose marriage is strained to the breaking point. Angst!

Helen Hunt will stay in front of the camera this time compared to her directorial debut with Then She Found Me.  She’s in for a nice break wearing only on hat.

Production of Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock begins late this month.

Lee’s ensemble cast includes Emile Hirsch, Imelda Staunton and Liev Schreiber and more as you read this post below.  It’s going to be an outstanding film.  I am very excited.

The movie is based on the memoir of Elliot Tiber, who played a role in helping the historic 1969 music fest unfold on his neighbor’s farm.

Contingency plans have been put in place in case SAG strikes in the event that work stoppage occurs because of a strike. With that in place Lee’s film is going into full production.

Demetri Martin (”The Daily Show With Jon Stewart”) is all set to play Tiber, an aspiring interior designer in Greenwich Village obliged to run the family business, a Catskills motel. In summer 1969, he was at the center of a generation-defining experience when he volunteered the motel to be the home base for Woodstock concert organizers after his neighbor, Max Yasgur, made his farm available for the event.

Staunton and Henry Goodman are set to play Tiber’s parents while Jonathan Groff is set to play Woodstock organizer Michael Lang. Hirsch will play a recently returned Vietnam vet, Eugene Levy is set to play Yasgur, and Schreiber is in talks to play a transvestite named Vilma.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is set to play a closeted married man having an affair with Tiber, while Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan play a hippie couple attending the concert. Dan Fogler is set play a local theater troupe head and Mamie Gummer is set to play Lang’s assistant.
