Kevin-SmithYou know, I don’t have much particular affection for Kevin Smith or his work–I think his best years were behind him after Mallrats, and I have to wonder if I didn’t like Mallrats because I was roughly the protagonists’ age when it emerged, thus giving me a note of resonance with it.  That and my best friend at the time was totally a Brodie whilst I was the T.S. of the outfit, except I NEVER managed to score a Brandi.  I’m sorry to all my exes, but truly, NONE of you were a match for mid-nineties Claire Forlani.  It just doesn’t happen.

But even I’m annoyed that Kevin Smith’s once again getting slammed by title censorship.  First, no network would air advertising for Zack and Miri Make A Porno because it had the word “porno” in it, and as we all know, hearing the word “porno” on network television causes nuns and small children’s heads alike to burst into flame.

And now, what do I find, but his upcoming A Couple of Dicks has been changed…to A Couple of Cops.

…sigh…

Seriously, does no one understand basic irony?  That “dick” is Depression-era slang for “detective”?  Or are we all so concerned about “naughty language” that we’re going ban-happy?  I don’t know, but whatever it is, I don’t much like it.

Sorry, Kevin.

Kevin-SmithWell I’ll be…folks, this is a day I never thought would come to pass.  I’ve been writing, off and on, about Kevin Smith’s abortive film Red State pretty much ever since I started blogging and first heard about it back in 2007.  But the word came down from Smith himself about a mysterious two am phone call in which he actually got the money to shoot the unusual horror film about religious fundamentalism gone murderously awry.

The political climate may have…shifted…somewhat since Red State’s first inception, but a Kevin Smith horror movie may be interesting to say the least.  But here’s the down side, kids–Smith may have the money now…but he may not have the time.  He’s currently working on A Couple of Dicks, a buddy cop movie featuring Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis, which is actually his first ever studio film.  Plus, he’s desperately longing to make a hockey movie (not surprising given Clerks and Mallrats, which both featured hockey scenes) around Warren Zevon’s song Hit Somebody.

But either way, if Smith wants to do Red State, Red State shall be done because he’s finally got the cash to do the job.

kevin-smith It was announced earlier this week that Kevin Smith would be directing the comedy A Couple of Dicks starring Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis. However, it was later reported that the name was changed to A Couple of Cops.

Thankfully, /Film carries word that Warner Bros. has decided to keep the film’s original title after all. Double entendres galore!

Written by Robb and Marc Cullen, the film will tell the story of two veteran LAPD detectives who attempt to track down a stolen, mint condition, 1952 baseball card.

The film is being primed for release on January 29, 2010.

brucewillistracymorganBruce Willis and Tracy Morgan are set to star in the detective comedy A Couple of Cops with Kevin Smith directing his first major studio movie.

A Couple of Cops focuses on a pair of cops who track down a stolen baseball card, rescue a Mexican beauty and must deal with gangsters and laundered drug money.

A futuristic outer space comedy is in development by writer-director Kevin Smith.

The film will allude to other sci-fi movies with a plot line around a father-son relationship. Smith has touched upon this type of genre in his earlier work but never made a sci-fi film.

As an independent filmmaker, Smith is aiming for a budget in the $45 million-$50 million bracket – his biggest budget so far.
Smith will start on the sci-fi project after he wraps up his next project Red State, which is about domestic terrorism in the Heartland with a spring start date.

Hollywood Reporter says that Smith is looking forward to exploring new character dynamics as well as outer space with a father and son relationship.

zack_and_miri_make_a_porno_movie_image_seth_rogen_and_elizabeth_banksAs one can expect, media outlets aren’t exactly friendly with Zack and Miri Make a Porno. The Kevin Smith-directed film is facing much antagonism with television stations and cable channels who are refusing to run ads for the film due to the word Porno in the title.

In fact, commercials for the film during Los Angeles’ Dodgers game on Fox Sports were dropped at the team’s request after some viewers complained. Additionally, the city of Philadelphia has refused posters at bus stops while posters in Boston have drawn complaints.

What do you guys think? Are people overreacting over a comedy film, or are their actions justified?

R Rating for Zack and Miri

zack and miri Averting commercial suicide, director Kevin Smith has won an appeal to get an R rating for his comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno. The movie was originally given a NC-17 rating, effectively prohibiting anyone under 17 from seeing the movie.

A MPAA spokesperson said the rating was revised after the group’s appeals board viewed the movie.

The film, set to open this October, has longtime platonic friends Zack and Miri solve their cash flow problems by creating an adult film together. The story picks up from there.

Here is an interview with Kevin Smith at Comic Con as he talks about his projects.

Archlight The NC-17 rating is considered a death sentence for movies as most movie theaters don’t show these movies and most distributors don’t even consider supporting one. It seems that director Kevin Smith is having a couple of issues with the rating of his upcoming comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno which was recently issued with a NC-17 rating from MPAA.

Seth Rogen, who stars in the film, has a few choice words for the MPAA: "They are really ****ing around with us…A guy ****ing a donkey, they ain’t got no problem with, but a man and a woman having sex they seem to have real issues with, for some weird reason. It’s insane. It’s completely insane."

He also talks about the harsh treatment movies get when it comes to sex than violence. "They [fight against] sex stuff. Isn’t that weird?” he asked. “It’s really crazy to me that ‘Hostel’ is fine, with people gouging their eyes out and sh– like that, but you can’t show two people having sex — that’s too much."

The film currently has a release date of October 31.
