Male fantasy characters from graphic novels, classic stories or Greek mythology is overwhelming the big screen. Josh Brolin here as Jonah Hex makes my heart skip a beat or two. Megan Fox also stars, so you boys can have a great time watching the movie too. If you want to see pics of Hex, click here for the source.
The Jonah Hex film has cast Will Arnett (Blades of Glory) and Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) to be major players in the story.
Based on the DC Comics property, the film follows Hex, a scarred bounty, track a voodoo practitioner who wants to raise an army of the undead to liberate the South.
Arnett will play a Union soldier who enlists Hex and is blindsided by the dirty fighting style of his enemies. Shannon will play Doc Cross Williams, the ringleader of a brutal gladiator circus event.
Shooting starts this month in Louisiana. Jimmy Hayward is directing.
Moving on from Transformers, Megan Fox is in final negotiations to star in two comic book adaptations – the action western Jonah Hex and the underwater adventure Fathom.
Fox will play Leila in Hex, a gun-wielding beauty and love interest of Hex (played by Josh Brolin), who is a scarred bounty hunter tracking a voodoo practitioner who wants to raise an army of undead to liberate the South.
The film is being directed by Jimmy Hayward and will start shooting next month.
Fathom sees her playing a woman named Aspen who learns she is a member of a race of aquatic humanoids who possess the ability to control water. It is currently being adapted by Prince of Persia game creator Jordan Mechner.

I am delighted to see John Malkovich take on a role of a missled demonic character. He will be countering against Josh Brolin in Jonah Hex, the Warner Bros. adaptation of the DC Comics property that begins production in April.
Malkovich is set to play Turnbull, a wealthy Southern plantation owner whose son is killed by Union soldiers during the Civil War. He blames Hex, a former confederate soldier-turned-hardened bounty hunter and gunslinger.
Horton Hears a Who director, Jimmy Hayward, is set to take on a live-action DC Comic character Jonah Hex for Warner Bros.Busy and versatile actor Josh Brolin is attached to star in the film. The studio plans to put the movie into production in March or April.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the character of Hex, known for having the right side of his face disfigured and wearing a Confederate army uniform, was a rough-and-tumble gunslinger and part-time bounty hunter whose adventures always ended in blood. One incarnation of his comic book series saw the Western genre combined with supernatural elements, which is likely to set the stage with Hayward’s own touch.
Hayward is a member of the Pixar family, where he worked on such films as Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo. He also had his finger in the animated film Robots.
Horton was Hayward’s first adventure as a director, which did quite well at the box office.
Moving on from Punisher: War Zone, director Lexi Alexander might do the upcoming Jonah Hex film. Apparently, she told Latino Review that she was sent a script for the film and “really liked it.”
“I like it even more that Mr. Josh Brolin is still attached. Who knows if he’ll stay, but it’s more exciting than I thought,” she said. “You get a story like this you think, “Oh God, I’m going to be doing the same thing over and over again” but it’s really, really interesting.”
Alexander notes that she would change “some things” in the script. However, she is not attached to the project yet; in fact, she points out that there are “many, many directors up for the same thing.”
Jonah Hex has hit a roadblock: Crank and Pathology writer/directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have left the film adaptation of the comic series. The duo wrote the script, but their exit as directors was attributed to “creative differences.” No other details was provided.
Being developed by production companies Mad Chance and Weed Road, the studio is moving quickly to get a new director. The film is still being targeted for a Spring 2009 start.
Jonah Hex may finally be moving forward, with Hollywood Elsewhere citing multiple sources as telling them that Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men) has been signed on for the title role in the Warner Bros. film.
The site’s editor is confident, claiming that the “deal is sealed.” However, the studio is yet to confirm the rumor, and Brolin’s agent claims the actor is not attached to the project.
Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor are helming the project. It is based on a western comic book anti-hero – a middle-aged bounty hunter and gunslinger who deals with supernatural stuff.
Posted earlier this week was a picture of Tom Jane in full costume as Jonah Hex, an upcoming DC Comics adaptation of the supernatural Western series. However, the Punisher actor is not involved in the project it seems, as he personally contacted Film School Rejects with the following statement:
“Yeah, the pic is real all right – my pal [writer/producer] Akiva Goldsman told me about the project and I fell in love with the idea right away. Being a huge fan of all things Hex – I just couldn’t help myself. I called up my buddy Chris Nelson and we spent a Saturday afternoon working up some make-up for this impromptu shoot and I fired a few pics off to Warners. How do people get a hold of this shit? It’s a little embarrassing seeing my fanboy enthusiasm spilled all over the web, but great scripts don’t come around too often, especially for characters I love.”
Well, what does it mean for the film? Hex writer/directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor did not see the above art until it spilled out on the Internet. Maybe they will be considering casting Jane for the role, who knows?
Jonah Hex is a DC Vertigo series that focuses on the titular alcoholic and confederate soldier turned supernatual gunslinger.
