Screenhead has joined Universal Studios in the celebration of director Sam Raimi returning to the horror genre with a vengeance by directing the critically acclaimed Drag Me to Hell available on DVD and Blu-ray. This movie is a spine-tingling tale of a young woman’s desperate quest to break an evil curse and save her soul from eternal damnation.

Raimi’s work on this film is brilliant. He doesn’t miss a beat of pulsating horror.  I am glad he’s back doing what he does best – horror movies.

The story follows Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) is on her way to having it all: a devoted boyfriend (Justin Long), a hard-earned job position, and a bright future. But when she’s forced to make a tough decision that evicts an elderly woman from her house, Christine becomes the victim of an evil curse. Now she has only three days to dissuade a dark spirit from stealing her soul before she is dragged to hell for an eternity of unthinkable torment.

Both the Blu-ray Hi-Def and DVD releases of Drag Me to Hell will contain the frightening, never-before-seen unrated director’s cut deemed too terrifying for theaters, as well as the theatrical version of the film.  The Blu-ray release also contains a digital copy of the film for a limited time only.  The perfect entertainment for horror fans and suspense addicts from the master of mayhem, Drag Me to Hell is the perfect entertainment for the Halloween season.

Screenhead has a copy of the DVD version of Drag Me to Hell for a giveaway.  Please post your name and we will pick the winner on Saturday, October 31, 2009 – Halloween Day!

killer chickIt’s something of a new phenomenon these days, but lately, the ladies are getting in on the killing sprees of horror film.

Not that this is necessarily a bad thing; anything new in filmmaking is a cause for celebration, especially in the world of “more of the same” filmmaking that we live these days.  But is it a good move?  Let’s take a look.

There have been plenty of chick killers lately, and I don’t know about you, but for me it’s always sort of a surprise to find out the chick did it.  It’s not expected, and the unexpected is often the scariest thing there is.

Whether it’s Dawn O’Keefe and her killer teeth–it’s really better if you don’t ask where those teeth are–or Megan Fox parading around Jennifer’s Body, or even The Uninvited, more and more horror movies are letting the ladies handle the knives.  Even where they don’t, they’ve only got a guy around for muscle, which was the case in The Strangers.

Like I said, it’s the unexpected that give horror a real punch.  But on an operational level, this may not work so well.  One of the biggest points in horror is how the killer is an unstoppable mass of muscle.  Sending a woman in to do that poses a serious challenge, especially if you pit her against men who will, on average, have superior upper body strength.  You’ll be left playing a handful of basic themes–either she gets super-strength from a device or otherworldly power, or she’s constantly vamping her way through her kills, counting on looking unassuming.  Unless you address the basic discrepancy in strength somehow, eventually, you’ll be repeating yourself.  Then, you lose the scare effect.

So can the ladies be effective horror movie killers?  They can, at least for a while, but it’ll take some doing to keep them all fresh.

Jesse Eisenberg stars and narrates Zombieland, which appears to be a hilarious movie also starring Woody Harrelson.  Just the other night I watched Eisenberg in The Hunting Party with Richard Gere and Terence Howard. I thought he was great and wanted to see him in more movies. Sure enough, here he is in Zombieland. Enjoy the hilarious trailer.

humptydumpty

You already know how I feel about horror movies. I avoid them terribly so.

The latest one that I will not see is Humpty Dumpty. The movie poster is superb and tells me the movie is creepy and sick. But get this storyline, which Latin Review reports:

“A half-human, half-alien creature embarks on a murderous rampage after his alien mother is abused by two rednecks in the Deep South.”

That storyline took a lot of imagination.  Anyway, the movie is directed by David Ellis who also directed Snakes on a Plane.  Go figure.

From the producers of The Ring and Disturbia comes the nail-biting suspense thriller, The Uninvited.  You can own it now on DVD and Blu-ray, featuring a Chilling Alternative ending not shown in theaters, which I am sure you’ll find way scarier. There are also deleted scenes and more.  The movie is only rated PG-13 from Paramount Home Entertainment.

Screenhead has ten copies to place in the mail for ten lucky winners from our giveaway.  Please post your name and Screenhead will pick the winners Monday, June 1, 2009.

Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures is remaking a pair of European horror films.samraimi

Anguish is the first one, which will be a remake of the 1987 Spanish horror film that was written and directed by Bigas Luna.

Ghost House Pictures has also acquired the remake rights to the Danish movie Room 205.

Anguish is a typical horror film that follows two girls who, while watching a scary movie, find themselves in a horror film of their own when their life starts to mirror the movie’s plot.

Jake Wade Wall (When a Stranger Calls) penned the screenplay.

Ghost House has signed up Room 205 director Martin Barnewitz to helm the English-language remake, which is being rebooted The Dorm.

Room 205, is another typical horror film, that follows a college freshman who moves into a dorm only to find that her room is haunted by sinister forces.
