The one thing I really love about short films is their openness.  Anybody can come along and shoot one of these on a shoestring in their backyard.  And today, we’re going to prove that exactly right with Dearest Mrs. Apple.

This is the story of a man, his unusual friendship, and the circumstances that led to its end.  I know, sounds kind of like some cheesy chick flick or something, but I assure you, someone will get eaten by the end of this.

Yeah. EATEN.

Dearest Mrs. Apple is actually pretty funny because of its ludicrous nature and its outlandish concept.  This is almost too stupid to be believed, but it will carry on anyway, despite the fact that it really has no business existing.

The Screenhead Ten Scale loves a quick cheap laugh, and thus hands Dearest Mrs. Apple a six out of ten for bringing the funny in short film.

So I’ve stumbled onto a big batch of a minor league movement in short film making–a strange kind of psuedo-machinima involving characters from The Sims in short film settings, and today we’ve got The Punishment up for review.

Basically, a bunch of children that look like they were pulled whole and breathing out of Village of the Damned go forth and set fire to things, and people, with their minds.  But what happens to these “demon spawn” is more horrible than you can imagine.

Actually, it’s not so much horrible as it is hilarious.

In all honesty though, for a quick two minute shot of movie, it won’t be half bad.  It’ll actually be pretty entertaining.  Oh, sure, I have no idea where these children came from or how they got to be pyrokinetics, or anything like that, but I know what happened to them in the end and I know it’s pretty funny.

The Screenhead Ten Scale stifles its laughter long enough to hand over a six out of ten for this slightly better than average low budget romp.

Every year, Adam Green (the guy who brought you Hatchet, among others) and crew get together for Halloween to make a special short film.  And admittedly, it wasn’t looking good this year, until they got one idea which they proceeded to knock out in about forty five minutes, Jack Chop.

Jack Chop is actually a parody of the well-known Shamwow commercials as a fellow named Nicolo (that’s what his name sounded like, anyway, he only said it the once) proceeds to sell us a product.  And of course, this won’t end well at ALL.

Nicolo is an extraordinarily foul mouthed individual, so I’ll warn you up front, this is not safe for work.  But he bravely soldiers on and introduces his product, the Jack Chop, which handles all your Jack O’Lantern carving needs, even those where you cut off a finger.  It’s a very clever advertising parody, and though there isn’t much of a plot to this “short film”, there’s still plenty of fun to be had here.

This poor shill is going to take so much injury trying to sell us a cheap Jack O’Lantern carving system that I almost feel bad for the putz.  Yeah…almost.

The Screenhead Ten Scale admits that this was a riot that looks like it was knocked out in forty five minutes and gives it a seven out of ten.

Some interesting news came from Hollywood Reporter that Sammo Hung is in talks to star in War Monkeys, a horror comedy following two janitors who, on Christmas day, get trapped in an underground research facility upsettingly unleashed military-trained Rhesus monkeys. One of the janitors is named Hung and he battles the rabid simians.

The horror comedy follows two janitors who, during a Christmas holiday, get trapped in an underground research facility after accidentally unleashing military-trained Rhesus monkeys. Hung is one of the janitors who battles the rabid simians.

I can see Woody Harrelson bashing some brains and battle zombies. The star is set to take on the lead role in the horror comedy Zombieland, which Ruben Fleischer is set to direct.

The horror comedy focuses on a mismatched pair of survivors who find friendship and redemption in a world overrun by zombies. Harrelson plays one of the men, a zombie fighter named Albuquerque.  Sounds like a comedy to me.
