blairwitchAre you sitting down?  You’re going to want to be sitting down for this.  You may well want to be DRUNK for this too because what I’m going to tell you is quite possibly too horrifying to contemplate sober.

So just a couple weeks ago, the tenth anniversary of the original Blair Witch Project came and went with little in the way of fanfare.  I’d all but forgotten, myself, and so did most of the media with the exception of Entertainment Weekly that did a “where are they now?” on the original principles.  Turns out most of them either got out of Hollywood entirely or found themselves doing bit parts for indie movies and horror flicks, with the possible exception of Josh Leonard, who got LEAD ROLES in indie movies and horror flicks.

But the two original filmmakers, Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, who probably still remember the sweet taste of a hundred million at the box office alongside of merch like no tomorrow (there were three Blair Witch computer games.  I actually bought the first at a then-Babbage’s discount bin for a measly five bucks but never got the chance to try it out), aren’t satisfied with their current lives of insignificance and obscurity and are making a bid for the big screen once more.

Quoth Myrick and Sanchez:

“Ideally, each Blair Witch film would be a completely different kind of movie. We’ve thought about doing a film that takes place in the late 1700s and looks like a [Stanley] Kubrick movie with gritty looking people and lighting. But now, we’re thinking about going back and and seeing what happened directly after the first film finished. I think it will have some kind of video element in it, but it won’t be a first person hand-held movie.”

There are literally dozens of ways to mock them for this idiocy, but somehow, I find myself unable to bring myself to do it.  I just can’t mock this horrible vision, because they so clearly believe in it.

Good luck, fellas…good luck getting anyone but direct to video interested, and even then, probably having a tough time pulling that off.

Peter Jackson is the producer of District 9 and he told Entertainment Weekly that the movie is “…an utterly original film.”  I am inclined to agree with Jackson because the movie has no stars; it was made for relatively little money ($30 million) by a 29-year-old, unknown South African-born director Neill Blomkamp.

What I find as interesting turn is that Entertainment Weekly has boldly called the movie “the most unlikely sci-fi blockbuster of the season.”  Exactly what does that mean?  We will find out when the movie opens August 14, 2009.  But I must admit that the movie would be nowhere if Peter Jackson’s name and talent weren’t attached.

I have viewed a couple of District 9 movie trailers, I can honestly say the movie is a science fiction thrill ride with lots of handheld camera work and I kind of surreal, reality TV quality and feel.

The movie is about alien refugees who are confined to an area known as District 9 in South Africa. Multi-National United is contracted to govern the Non-humans. The private company will profit tremendously from the activation of alien weaponry, which requires alien DNA. When an MNU operative contracts a virus that alters his DNA, he becomes the most valuable man in the world, as well as the most hunted, because he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology.

I rather like this cover, very good looking guy, that Ryan Reynolds is, but would have preferred a whole body shot versus a three-quarter.  Click on EW’s cover and you’ll see a full body shot of Reynolds waving super-water guns.  You will also find out about his latest film with Sandra Bullock.

Reynolds presents his picks for favorite movie, TV show, band, and book – plus a great new idea for a musical.

 Must Movie:       Being There

Must TV Show:   Intervention

Must Band:       The Be Good Tanyas

Must Book:       The Tale of the Unknown Island, by Jose Saramago

Must Videogame: N/A “I don’t really play videogames,” he says.  “Is there a way to waste more f—ing time? The Internet’s enough.  The last videogame I played was Ms. Pacman.”

Must Gadget:    The Kindle

Must Scapegoat for the Moral Decline of Modern Society: Jon & Kate Plus Eight “I find that whole situation to be horrible and awful.  Every time I see the headlines, I begin an inner hurricane of throwing up.  I wanna see Jon & Kate Plus Eight, the Musical.  Jon versus Kate.  I wanna see four kids on one side, and four kids on the other, snapping menacingly to music as they walk toward one another.”

Yes, the robots are coming and Megan Fox talks about her career and future with the Transformers. I am sure that’s why you want to click on the magazine cover to read bits of the interview not because there are seven full body and three-quarter shots of her revealing her tatoos.

Head on over to Entertainment Weekly and take a gander at the 17 stunning Watchmen portraits.  The pictures are eerie and rather haunting.

Entertainment Weekly shared these images with their readers, so they can have a look at the coming year in movies.  Christian Bale looks awesome as John Connor; I am very excited about the next installment. The producers are excited, too. So much so, that they have committed to two more Terminator films after this one.

Entertainment Weekly has posted an exclusive clip of Angelina Jolie in this month’s Clint Eastwood drama Changeling on EW.com.  Though she’s the proud owner of an Academy Award, Jolie hasn’t been nominated since winning Best Supporting Actress for Girl, Interrupted in 2000. But her forceful performance in Changeling could change that.

In this scene, Jolie is helped along by Tony winner Denis O’Hare (Michael Clayton), who plays a menacing doctor at a mental ward where she’s been wrongly placed.

Robert Forster is joining the cast of NBC’s Heroes.  Sources have confirmed that Heroes has tapped Forster to play Nathan and Peter’s presumed-dead pops, Arthur Petrelli in Entertainment Weekly

Given Heroes‘ penchant for time travel though, there’s no telling if we’ll see Arthur in the present day, via flashback, or during one of Hiro’s little excursions. Another unknown: Whether Arthur will use his powers (you know he’s got ‘em) for good or evil.

Rumors of Arthur’s possible “resurrection” this season have been burning up the Internets for months. And while it’s not clear WHEN Forster will first turn up, at press tour last month, his on-screen widow, Cristine Rose, hinted that a bombshell would be dropped in the two-hour premiere on Sept. 22. “There’s a secret that comes out that if you’re a true fan, you’re just going to DIE,” she teased. “It’s a good Angela secret, and it’s [not about] her powers.”

Well, considering the first hour of the premiere was screened at Comic-Con, and, per multiple eyewitnesses, no such Angela secret was revealed, it’s safe to say the big reveal will take place in Hour 2. Of course, whether or not said reveal is related to Arthur is also a big unknown.

‘Sopranos’ Pastore Plays Soaps

An interesting turn of events for all you Soprano fans, Entertainment Weekly reports that The SopranosVincent Pastore will play a big time mobster named Maximus Giambetti on General Hospital this October.  Maximus comes to Port Charles to deal with his two sons, Sonny’s bodyguards Max (Derek Cheetwood) and Milo (Drew Cheetwood). Pastore’s Max hits town thinking his eldest is actually the local mob boss – an idea that his son may have helped foster – and is none too happy to find out about his sons’ lowly status in the biz.

Entertainment Weekly just announced Courteney Cox is joining the cast of Scrubs for a three-episode arc as Sacred Heart’s new Chief of Medicine.

Cox’s boss lady character will “ruffle feathers” according to a Scrubs insider.
