Whip It looks like a fun movie, and boy, we sure could use an ensemble movie that’s a blast to watch. Ellen Page is in every clip and is the main focus in all the trailers I’ve seen.  The story centers on her character Bliss, a beauty pageant throw back who discovers her aspirations to be a roller derby queen.

Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut shines brilliantly because just watching these clips it’s easy to see how comfortable the actors are in front of the camera. Marcia Gay Harden is great as the backstage mom of beauty pageants.  Watch her in the last clip, she’s incredible.

Do you recognize the father in the first clip?  That’s Daniel Stern from the original Home Alone movie.  Now, we know what happened to him after serving time in the penitentiary after his fugitive days on Home Alone. Whip It opens October 2, 2009.

“Be Your Own Hero” is a great featurette with Drew Barrymore.  I can’t wait to see Whip It, which opens October 2, 2009.

WhipIt_finish_RGBIf this movie has a great story it will be a classic because the idea of chicks on roller skates is awesome. That is how the movie is being sold to the male public at large.

Honestly, I really think this is a chick movie, girl’s night out.

I saw the trailer some time ago and loved it.  The cast alone tells you the acting will be freakin’ great.  The movie stars Ellen Page, Kristen Wiig, Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis (I love Juliette Lewis.), Zoe Bell, Ari Graynor and Alia Shawkat.

The movie is about a women’s roller derby team. That’s where the phrase “Whip it” derives from. The team whips it and they can score big time.  Page stars as Bliss, a young Texan who takes a stand against her parents, beauty pageants and everything in general by joining a roller derby league. The script comes from Shauna Cross, adapted from her book “Derby Girl.” Drew Barrymore also directed the film – her first directing gig.

Ellen Page, who made her fame in the movie Juno,  keeps the same comedic pace with  Drew Barrymore  in Whip it, Barrymore’s directorial debut film.  If the movie is as funny as the trailer, then it’s girl’s night out and daddy gets to babysit the kids – this is one heck of a fun movie.

Page plays a young woman named Bliss, who is tired of being pushed into beauty pageants by her parents.  On a journey of self discovery, Bliss joins a female roller derby team and finds her destiny.  I just love their green uniforms. Don’t you?

Three outstanding actors, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy and Ellen Page, christopher_nolanare in talks with Warner Bros. to join Leonardo DiCaprio in Christopher Nolan’s Inception. Nolan will write and direct the film as well as produce it.

Production starts this summer for 2010 release.

The storyline is hush-hush, but the studio hints at a contemporary sci-fi with action set within the architecture of the mind.

What do Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis and Zoe Bell have in common? They are mixing it up with Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore in the roller ring.

Barrymore is set to play Page’s teammate the roller derby comedy Whip it!  She’ll then skate behind the camera between takes to make her feature directorial debut. Go Drew!!

Harden plays a domineering ex-beauty queen who prefers to see her daughter, Bliss (Page), in pageants than skates.  Wiig (”Saturday Night Live”) plays Bliss’ rowdy mentor, Malice in Wonderland. Lewis is Dinah Might, the star of Austin’s top team. Bell plays a medical technician moonlighting as derby star Bloody Holly.

The film begins shooting this summer in Michigan and Texas.

Taking a look at The Stone Angel trailer, one can see a very human story of a woman who made mistakes and reflects back as she contemplates moving into a nursing home at the age of ninety-four.  Ellen Page and Ellen Burstyn star in this film directed by Kari Skogland.

I interviewed Skogland some years back and found her on the cutting edge of moviemaking. When I heard she was behind this production, the thought didn’t mix well because her other films I had seen, Liberty Stands Still and Zebra Lounge, are quite different from Stone Angel as you will see from the trailer.

But don’t get me wrong. Skogland comes across very warm and sympathetic. She is a mother, too. Thus, I can appreciate her talents and abilities to make an endearing film like The Stone Angel.

Skogland was struck by The Stone Angel, based on the bestselling novel by Manitoban author Margaret Laurence, when she was fourteen years old after she read the book in school.

The film has a limited release — July 11th.

There are no bounds for English literature. Ellen Page has decided to play one of its most famous characters, Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre.

Bronte’s classic 19th century romance is a story of a mousy governess who softens the heart of her surly employer Mr. Rochester, only to discover that he’s hiding a terrible secret.

I am sure we all know that “Jane Eyre” is one of the most adapted novels in English literature, with at least 20 previous film or TV versions. Most recently, the BBC made it into a miniseries that won three Emmys last year. The last bigscreen adaptation, in 1996, was directed by Franco Zeffirelli and starred Charlotte Gainsbourg.

I am sure one more “Jane Eyre” won’t hurt.  The character is quite different from Ellen Page’s “Juno.”

“Peacock” has an all-star cast to gush over: Susan Sarandon, Bill Pullman, Josh Lucas, Cillian Murphy and Ellen Page.

The psychological thriller takes place in a small town, where a quiet bank clerk’s (Murphy) life is shattered by a train crashing into his back yard revealing a woman living there.

Michael Lander is set to direct with a script he co-wrote together with Ryan Roy.

According to Variety, Sarandon stars in Warner Bros.’ upcoming “Speed Racer” and was most recently seen in Disney’s “Enchanted.”

Pullman starred in the Sundance film “Phoebe in Wonderland” and “Bottle Shock.” He also will be seen in Jennifer Lynch’s “Surveillance,” which will bow in Cannes this month.

Lucas is in production on Michael Cuesta’s “Tell-Tale” and next can be seen in Boaz Yakin’s “Death in Love.” His production company, Two Bridges, recently wrapped “The Boy in the Box,” in which he plays the single father of a mentally challenged boy.

With this cast “Peacock” looks very promising.

“Street Kings” and “Prom Night” are the movies to hit the top two box office score.

“Kings” is rated R while “Night” is rated PG-13; it looks like the “Night” will come out ahead because the rating gives the movie a larger audience base. Although I prefer Keanu Reeves and Forest Whitaker over being scared in a dark movie theater.

A nice gem to try to catch this weekend is “Smart People” with limited distribution. Ellen Page, Dennis Quaid and Sarah Jessica Parker star in this dark comedy.
