HorsemenIf you really, REALLY, just couldn’t get enough of the movie Seven, then I’m somewhat happy to announce that you’ll get to enjoy a low-rent knockoff in the form of Horsemen, new from Lions Gate.

When a recently widowed detective finds himself forced to make ends meet between his detective work and his family, he ends up on the bad end of a murder spree focused around the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.  And as his family situation steadily deteriorates around him, the case only gets stranger and more horrifying.

Okay, okay–so it watches like a low-budget version of Seven, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.  Just because we don’t have Brad Pitt screaming about what’s in the box doesn’t mean we can’t have fun with Dennis Quaid being a mostly absentee father!

But it’s true–Horsemen is a fairly involving crime drama, but it does leave a lot of unpleasant plot holes.  Frankly, I wondered why they even bothered with the whole family thing at all–it’s not like it made much difference on the plot.

The Screenhead Ten Scale, meanwhile, hands this ambivalent crime thriller a four out of ten for not being too bad, but not being anything special, either.  Plus, being derivative is never helpful in these situations; if you’re going to rip someone else off, at least do it right.

pandorumWell folks, with just under six weeks until it bows in theatres, the final Pandorum poster has finally been released.  It’s a doozy, I’ll tell you that much, though I have to wonder if it’s really as effective as it could be.

The movie stars, of all people, Dennis Quaid as part of a two-man team of astronauts who suddenly wake up in their spaceship.  But this by itself wouldn’t make much of a movie, so there are complications.

1. The ship is completely powered down.

2. Neither one of the astronauts can remember who they are or what their mission is.

3. There’s something alive on board the ship…and it’s not supposed to be there.

Given the rather nonspecific nature of the plot synopses, the poster actually makes a note of sense.  But there’s a difference, at least to me, between playing your cards close to the vest and just being truculent.  This qualifies as sheer truculence to me–they’re not going to tell you a THING before you actually watch it, and while that does make for the most possible suspense, it also makes a buying decision difficult.  Will this be worthwhile?

That’s a question I’ll be happy to answer for you, folks.  Keep it right here for Screenhead coverage.

In Pandorum, actors, Dennis Quaid (Vantage Point, The Express) and Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma, Alpha Dog), join Cam Gigandet (Never Back Down, Twilight), Cung Le (Tekken, Fighting), newcomer Antje Traue and director Christian Alvart (Antibodies) to tell the terrifying story of two crew members stranded on a spacecraft who quickly realize they are not alone. Two astronauts awaken in a hyper-sleep chamber aboard a seemingly abandoned spacecraft. Pitch black, they are disoriented, and the only sound is a low rumble and creak from the belly of the spacecraft. They can’t remember anything – who are they, what is their mission? The only way out of the chamber is a dark and narrow airshaft. Corporal Bower (Foster), the younger of the two, crawls inside, while the other, Lt. Payton (Quaid), stays behind for guidance on a radio transmitter. As Bower ventures deeper and deeper into the ship, he begins to uncover a terrifying reality. Slowly the spacecraft’s shocking and deadly secrets come unraveled, and the astronauts realize that the survival of mankind hinges on their actions.

Dennis Quaid is set to star as President Clinton with Julianne Moore  playing Hillary Clinton, and the ever so often Tony Blair, Michael Sheen, will portray the clintonblairBritish Prime Minister in The Special Relationship, an HBO film about the irreplaceable and sometimes turbulent political relationship between the newly inaugurate PM and the U.S. president.

The film isn’t scheduled to go to production yet.  The film denotes the directing debut of “Frost/Nixon” playwright Peter Morgan, who wrote the screenplay.

I am sure all these actors and Morgan will pull off a delightful and insightful movie.

Pandorum is an astronaut’s worse nightmare. Two astronauts awaken in a hyper-sleep chamber aboard an outwardly abandoned spacecraft. The pitch black disorients them, and the only sound is a low rumble and creak from the belly of the spacecraft. They have no memory of anything – who are they, what is their mission?

The only way out of the chamber is a dark and narrow airshaft. Corporal Bower (Ben Foster), the younger of the two, crawls inside, while the other, Lt. Payton (Dennis Quaid), stays behind for guidance on a radio transmitter. As Bower ventures deeper and deeper into the ship, he discovers a terrifying reality. Slowly the spacecraft’s shocking and deadly secrets spin out the truth, and the astronauts come to grips with the fact that survival of mankind centers on their actions.

The Horsemen, a Se7en Sequel?

Se7en is one of the best crime movies I’ve ever seen. It’s not only the actors that make it great but it’s the screenplay that will impress you. When I watched this trailer for The Horsemen, I got that deja-vu feeling. Is Dennis Quaid starring in a winner movie? The Horsemen has already been launched in Italy and it will hit the U.S. on March 6.

Aidan Breslin played by Quaid is a detective that’s mourning his recently departed wife. While neglecting his kids he finds himself immersed in a case that’s beyond understanding. A series of murders point to the Four Hoursmen of the Apocalypse, War, Famine, Pestilence and Death. Hence the deja-vu feeling. Will I watch it? Most certainly. Any movie is good until proven guilty bad

You saw the G.I. Joe Trailer during the Super Bowl, but here it is again.  The special effects are super.

Having Dennis Quaid in The Horsemen places the movie in the mainstream. It’s too creepy for me, but horror fanatics are going to love it and the box office will show it.

“Street Kings” and “Prom Night” are the movies to hit the top two box office score.

“Kings” is rated R while “Night” is rated PG-13; it looks like the “Night” will come out ahead because the rating gives the movie a larger audience base. Although I prefer Keanu Reeves and Forest Whitaker over being scared in a dark movie theater.

A nice gem to try to catch this weekend is “Smart People” with limited distribution. Ellen Page, Dennis Quaid and Sarah Jessica Parker star in this dark comedy.
