Johnny Depp may join Angelina Jolie in The Tourist, a film that is experiencing many, many casting and directing changes – yet is set for production this February.
If Depp joined Jolie, he would play an American tourist drawn into a web of intrigue and danger by a female Interpol agent (Jolie) as she attempts to locate a criminal who was once her lover.
You may be asking yourself, wait…I thought Sam Worthington was playing this part or Tom Cruise. You’re thoughts are correct but changes happen in the film biz fast and furious. Even Charlize Theron was attached to play Jolie’s part.
I am not sure about all the directors, but Alfonso Curaron is at the head of the line to take on this juicy and plum gig.
I like the idea of Depp and Jolie working together on a spy thriller. Don’t you?
Angelina Jolie is the lead actress for the movie The Tourist, which is set to start production in February 2010. It looks like Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck will be the director for the Spyglass thriller.
The Tourist will be the first movie for von Donnersmarck since the German director’s 2006 breakout The Lives of Others, which won the Academy Award for foreign-language film.
Jolie just wrapped up Phillip Noyce’s Salt. So, shes ready to play a female Interpol agent who draws an unwitting American tourist into her attempt to locate a criminal who was once her lover. Worthington, the Australian actor who next appears as the star of the James Cameron-directed Avatar, is to play the American tourist.
The film is a remake of the 2005 French thriller Anthony Zimmer. Julian Fellowes penned the original script that was rewritten by Valkyrie scribe Christopher McQuarrie.
Described as the biggest Russian filmmaker, Timur Bekmabetov has revealed that he has started work on making the sequel to Wanted, the movie famously known for bullet curving and, most importantly, showing Angelina Jolie’s sweet backend. Interestingly, the latter will be back, as he said that they have found a way of bringing Jolie’s character back.
Bekmabetov also said that shooting will take place in America, India and Russia. He has gotten himself a $150 million budget for the film, which makes it the biggest Hollywood production made by a Russian filmmaker. The director will once again have Russian crew involved in every aspect of production.
Angelina Jolie snagged a great gig with Fox 2000 and author Patricia Cornwell. All three are teaming up for a killer deal.
The studio is working on acquiring screen rights to Cornwell’s bestselling book series on medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta, to develop as a vehicle for Jolie. This deal should set her up for a long career as she raises her brood with Brad Pitt.
Sixteen novels means franchise deals in Hollywood. If you just do one a year that’s 16 years of commitment for Jolie. But wait a minute, Variety reports that the first film won’t be tied to a specific Cornwell mystery title. The opera-loving coroner Scarpetta will be the lead in a suspense thriller in the vein of The Silence of the Lambs and Seven.
Oh well, that’s Hollywood.
The truth of the matter is that Cornwell is one of the biggest selling female authors in the world. My guess is that if you attach Cornwell’s name and Jolie’s name to a film, it’s bankable.
Following rumors of Megan Fox replacing Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, Warner Bros. Pictures and producer Dan Lin have confirmed that a reboot of the Tomb Raider film franchise is currently in early development.
There’s a problem, however, with the rights being an issue. Paramount made the first two movies based on the game, but the film rights have since reverted to Eidos. Interestingly, Time Warner upped its stake to nearly 20% in Eidos last year and film rights to the property came as part of the deal.
The project will follow in the vein of the Batman and James Bond series, ignoring previous films and reimagining the roots of Lara Croft, adventurer extraordinaire.
The project is currently in its early phases, with a writer and director yet to be attached. Casting Lara Croft is an unlikely event for a long time to come.
The Tomb Raider films weren’t exactly Oscar-worthy, but they were good entertainment, mostly due to the fact that Angelina Jolie was Lara Croft. Now, it seems the producers are considering taking away the one thing that worked for the films, as they are planning to replace Jolie with Transformers babe Megan Fox.
Fox can surely look and act the part, but she certainly doesn’t have the star power of Jolie. Even then, the film will need a better script and a more capable director to actually amount to decent entertainment.
A third film is currently in development with a production schedule of 2010 for release during summer 2011.

Talk about aging well… Clint Eastwood has directed on average a film a year this decade, and there’s no sign of stopping. And he has managed to pick up the occasional award on his way. This week sees the release of the trailer for his latest film, Gran Torino, which is due out December 17th.
At a first glance, this film seems a whole lot more appealing than the dull, drab tired story that Changeling seems to be (I mean police corruption, lost children and their desperate mothers, and unfair mental institutions have been done to death in cinema already. Clint must be too busy making movies to watch any of the dozens that cover those issues). For one, it stars Clint himself as a craggy old bastard at odds with his family and even the local wet-behind-the-ears priest. Already it feels more honest than Jolie wailing away with a glimmer of an Oscar in her eyes.
However, there’s somethign potentially subious about the premise. This old war vet bemoans the inclusion of “Chinese” into his neighbourhood, only to unwillingly intervene in some Asian gang terrorising. He bonds with the honest Hmong family and plans to stop the gang that’s hassling them. A simple idea, but does it suggest that Asians, or even immigrants, into the USA are weak and pathetic, and need the help of a good ol’ hard-as-nails white American to save them? The trailer does suggest so. Nevertheless, it looks a lot more engaging than Clint’s last few films, and may get audiences debating as to whether it’s an honest look at inter-racial tensions in the Land of the Free, or whether it’s just Dirty Harry Takes on the Asians.
