Kevin-SmithYou know, I don’t have much particular affection for Kevin Smith or his work–I think his best years were behind him after Mallrats, and I have to wonder if I didn’t like Mallrats because I was roughly the protagonists’ age when it emerged, thus giving me a note of resonance with it.  That and my best friend at the time was totally a Brodie whilst I was the T.S. of the outfit, except I NEVER managed to score a Brandi.  I’m sorry to all my exes, but truly, NONE of you were a match for mid-nineties Claire Forlani.  It just doesn’t happen.

But even I’m annoyed that Kevin Smith’s once again getting slammed by title censorship.  First, no network would air advertising for Zack and Miri Make A Porno because it had the word “porno” in it, and as we all know, hearing the word “porno” on network television causes nuns and small children’s heads alike to burst into flame.

And now, what do I find, but his upcoming A Couple of Dicks has been changed…to A Couple of Cops.

…sigh…

Seriously, does no one understand basic irony?  That “dick” is Depression-era slang for “detective”?  Or are we all so concerned about “naughty language” that we’re going ban-happy?  I don’t know, but whatever it is, I don’t much like it.

Sorry, Kevin.

Kevin-SmithWell I’ll be…folks, this is a day I never thought would come to pass.  I’ve been writing, off and on, about Kevin Smith’s abortive film Red State pretty much ever since I started blogging and first heard about it back in 2007.  But the word came down from Smith himself about a mysterious two am phone call in which he actually got the money to shoot the unusual horror film about religious fundamentalism gone murderously awry.

The political climate may have…shifted…somewhat since Red State’s first inception, but a Kevin Smith horror movie may be interesting to say the least.  But here’s the down side, kids–Smith may have the money now…but he may not have the time.  He’s currently working on A Couple of Dicks, a buddy cop movie featuring Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis, which is actually his first ever studio film.  Plus, he’s desperately longing to make a hockey movie (not surprising given Clerks and Mallrats, which both featured hockey scenes) around Warren Zevon’s song Hit Somebody.

But either way, if Smith wants to do Red State, Red State shall be done because he’s finally got the cash to do the job.

One of my favorite actors, Jason Lee, is set to star with Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan and Michelle Trachtenberg injasonlee Warner Bros. cop comedy A Couple of Dicks with Kevin Smith directing.

The comedy focuses on a pair of cops who track down a stolen baseball card, rescue a Mexican beauty and must deal with gangsters and laundered drug money.

I am looking forward to seeing this comedy with such a stellar cast and Smith directing, I can’t see how if could go wrong — fingers crossed! But you never know with comedies — they are so touchy!

Lee will portray the stepfather of Michelle Trachtenberg who plays the daughter of Willis.

Lee stars in Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel opening on Christmas Day according to IMDb.

seann-william-scottKnown best for playing assholes, Sean William Scott, and Adam Brody have joined the cast for Kevin Smith’s upcoming buddy action-comedy A Couple of Dicks.

It will follow a maverick cop (Bruce Willis) and his partner (Tracy Morgan) as they track a valuable stolen baseball card and rescue a Mexican beauty who holds the key to millions in laundered drug money. Plausible? Not really, but should make for a good comedy.

Scott will play a thief known as “Shit Bandit” (yes, I know) for the souvenirs he leaves at his robberies. Meanwhile, Brody will play an abrasive detective not happy to be working with Willis and Morgan.

Shooting begins next week in New York.

kevin-smith It was announced earlier this week that Kevin Smith would be directing the comedy A Couple of Dicks starring Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis. However, it was later reported that the name was changed to A Couple of Cops.

Thankfully, /Film carries word that Warner Bros. has decided to keep the film’s original title after all. Double entendres galore!

Written by Robb and Marc Cullen, the film will tell the story of two veteran LAPD detectives who attempt to track down a stolen, mint condition, 1952 baseball card.

The film is being primed for release on January 29, 2010.
