While we were all busy getting outraged at Warner Brothers’ request that Tim Burton lay off the blood and gore a bit in his latest flick, they announced today the release schedule for the film.  DreamWorks has announced a December 21 release date, and is moving Sweeney up from a limited release to a wide release.  In other words, instead of a white Christmas, we’ll be enjoying a bloody red one.

They claim that the move to make it a wider release is to eliminate concern that a limited release would give the impression that Sweeney Todd was simply an art house film.  But I am left wondering if this decision is really just an indicator that WB (the UK distributor for the film) is or already has gotten their way with Burton, and have chopped the film to bits, getting rid of enough to earn it a PG-13 rating.  Variety is saying that Dreamworks and Paramount are still looking forward to a R-Rated release stateside, so here’s to hoping they’re right!
