Superbad’s Supes Means Flops for Invasion, Legion
August 22nd, 2007 in Actors, Box Office, Movie News
Superbad’s box office premiere proved badder that expected, just in a good way. The raunchy surpise hit added an extra 2 million to its successful +30 million gross, which according to IMDB, Sony believes comes from “fantastic word-of-mouth” - which seems to be the case, given the flick’s rising cult status.
Unfortunately, Superbad’s soar has lead to plummet of two other openers. Nicole Kidman’s Invasion only opened at just below $6 million - a virtual death blow for the $80 million dollar sci-fi flick. No less a disaster was King Arthur 2 . . . excuse me . . . The Last Legion, who only opened to $2.7 million. Even totaled with its foreign gross, the action epic has only taken in $7 million to its $67 million dollar budget.
With not much in the way of competition, I’m seeing another green weekend for Superbad this coming Saturday and Sunday. But Invasion and Last Legion should be wary - against the likes of Jason Statham and Jet Li’s War or Samuel L. Jackson and Josh Harnett’s Resurrecting the Champ - the prior two films face odds are insurmontable as their plots to make more money to their budgets. Â

I have a feeling that “War” is going to do well when it gets shown. And I’m not just saying this because I’m a Statham fan or even more - a Jet Li fan.
But it’s just a feeling, I could be wrong.

I think you may be right. War seems to have unrelenting action - something I heard was missing from Invasion. I don’t know how well it’ll do, but I could see it making at least a sizeable dent in the box office proceedings.
