In the movie Gray Matters, Gray (Heather Graham) and Sam (Thomas Cavanaugh) are the best of friends, and get along so well and cutesy that they are often mistaken for a couple. They live together, go out together, and even finish eachother’s sentences. But they’re not a couple, but rather, they are brother and sister.

Their relationship is great, and the two are getting along happily, but the more often that people mistake them for a couple, the more terrified they become that they’ll never find their special someone. So finally, they decided to branch out and try to meet someone. They agree that bars are out of the question, and decided to head to the local dog park. There’s one problem though, they don’t have a dog. So they ask a kid to borrow his dog for a bit, and soon enough Gray spots her brother Sam checking someone out, Charlie (Bridget Moynahan). Gray decides to go over to her and give her a preliminary “interview” to find out if she’d be good for her brother. Amazingly, she’s everything he’s looking for and even Gray is impressed. So Gray convinces Sam to ask her out, and Charlie actually agrees!

It looks like the start of a happy relationship, and just when we think Gray might want to go out and find her own guy, we’re thrown for a curve. After just a few days of dating, Sam and Charlie decide that they’re going to Vegas to get married! Naturally Gray is shocked, and somewhat jealous, but she goes along with it.

The three head off to Vegas. Sam has booked a gorgeous room for him and Charlie, and a cheap room for Gray. But wanting to keep at least some tradition alive, the girls convince Sam to stay in the cheaper room by himself, and that he can’t see his bride until the morning when they get married. The girls will do their own thing. They get drunk and have a great time. By the end of the night Charlie is much worse off than Gray, and can’t even undress herself to get to bed. So when Gray tries to help, the two end up sharing a passionate kiss. And then Charlie passes out for the rest of the night.

Gray cannot sleep, realizing that she has kissed her brother’s fiance! But what is on her mind even more than that is the fact that she really, truly is attracted to Charlie and enjoyed the kiss. She doesn’t sleep, and spends the entire night pacing around, worrying.

What happens next? Does Gray talk to Charlie about the kiss? Will Charlie remember the kiss? And what does she tell her brother? I’m not going to spoil the entire film, so I won’t share all of the details, but as the back of the box tells us….. Gray finally comes to the realization that she is likes women, and the reason she’s never been able to have a successful relationship with a man is that she is a lesbian.

There are lots of surprising twists and turns in this film to hold your attention and distinguish from other boy-meets-girl (or girl-meets-girl) romantic comedies. You won’t laugh your ass off, and you won’t cry your eyes out either. Nor will you be overwhelmed with lots girl-on-girl action (sorry guys!). The film’s got an stellar line-up with lots of recognizable actors and actresses, all who play their parts well, including: Heather Graham, Tom Cavanaugh, Bridget Moynahan, Molly Shannon, Alan Cumming, Sissy Spacek, and Rachel Shelley.
All in all, Gray Matters is a nice happy film, perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
