Spike Lee To Direct L.A. Riots Film
December 7th, 2006 in Directors, Movies
TMZ are reporting that Spike Lee (now with grey beard) will direct an as yet untitled film about the 1992 Los Angeles Riots for Imagine Entertainment.
The script is being penned by none other than John Ridley - the man responsible for the story to David O. Russell’s Iraq-tastic Clooney, Wahlberg, Ice Cube film Three Kings and more recently the controversial Esquire essay The Manifesto of Ascendancy for the Modern American Nigger. So don’t expect a by-the-numbers approach from this guy.
Lee is easily the best man for the director’s chair, having more or less prophesied the riots three years before they happened with Do The Right Thing, and he’s riding high right now after the critical and commercial success of Inside Man.
No real story details yet, but the film will apparently focus on events before and after the actual riot, as opposed to during. Whatever happens, a Spike Lee - John Ridley filmmaking combo is enough to grab my attention, so I’ll be following this one with interest.
