And today we’re back in full style with Soulveniers, one of the finalists in the Halloween Horror Nights short film contest.
How this one got to be a finalist, I’ll never know. Unless substantial portions of the playback were missing the plot was a complete loss to me. As far as I can tell it’s about a group of friends who’ve been sharing the same nightmare for reasons no one will even try to explain. And that’s really about it.
Though I admit that the music is excellent and the last minute or so is spectacularly creepy, there’s just nothing in here that would denote that any kind of a script was written for this. I half think that it was improvised, on the spot, and the only real direction was “Okay, so you’re slowly going crazy….”.
The Screenhead Ten Scale takes this conglomeration of great music and lousy plot and gives it a two out of ten. Soulveniers makes absolutely no sense, and is therefore completely beyond recommendation.
