Sony Pictures Animation is going all fantasy on us, as they have picked up the film rights to Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson’s children’s fantasy book series The Familiars.

The series follows three young wizard apprentices who, after being taken to an evil kingdom by a nefarious queen, have to rely on their animal companions to escape. The animals in question are an alley cat, a blue jay and a tree frog.

Epstein and Jacobson themselves are adapting the script. Sam Raimi, who was recently dragged to hell, and Josh Donen are negotiating to come onboard as producers.
