n242740 Variety reports that Sony Pictures has acquired screen rights to James Patterson’s young adult novel series Maximum Ride.

The series follows the story of six children who have been genetically altered to be 98% human and 2% bird. The kids are taught to fly, but escape the laboratory where they lead a lab-rat existence. The scientists then send a pack of part-human part-wolves called Erasers to hunt them down.

The script is being written by Don Payne (Fantasic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer), with James Patterson serving as executive producer.
