Variety reports that Sony acquired the feature rights to Wil Haygood’s Washington Post story “A Butler Well Served by This Election” a few weeks after the presidential election. The story chronicled Eugene Allen’s work for eight presidents from 1952 through 1986 along with the hope and optimism he and his wife shared as Barack Obama was about to be elected.
Allen’s wife died the day before the election and was buried on the same day that the article was published.
Award-winning screenwriter Danny Strong will adapt “The Butler” for Sony Pictures.
