‘Sicko’ Only to be Shown on 800 Screens

If you plan on catching the buzz-flick of the month ‘Sicko’ you may want to plan ahead. The movie is only set to be shown on 800 screens throughout the country. The Michael Moore film is set for a June 29th release.

Variety says industry leaders hope that the new offering from Moore will bring greater attention to the documentary genre. After a series of hits documentary films have hit a slump. With the heavyweight in documentary field, pun intended, Moore will bring his superstar status this style of film once again.

Here is what Variety wrote:

“There is a little bit of a fatigue factor right now in the public with documentaries because a lot of films that are coming out are addressing hard subject matter,” says Heidi Ewing, who co-directed “Jesus Camp,” which was released last September amid plenty of press and cumed $902,544. “Filmmakers feel a responsibility right now to address the war, the state of the union, and sometimes those stories are hard to watch.”

Especially in a 24-hour mediasphere that includes Web video and mobile content, director Morgan Spurlock says audiences “hear it on the news and they see it on television so they probably go, ‘Why do I want to go a theater and pay $10 to see something that might further depress me about what is happening in the world?’ “

Those are some good points and hopefully the documentary medium will be able to continue be relevant in this changing world. It is personally one of my favorite genres
