dextercbs.jpgIf you for any reason have not yet watched Showtime’s hit series “Dexter”, you’re really missing out.  Season two of the show just recently wrapped up, and a third season is scheduled to air sometime in 2008, but with the writer’s strike in force, well it’s not clear when.  If you haven’t yet caught the series because you don’t have cable or you don’t get Showtime, I have good news: beginning next month, CBS will begin airing the first season of “Dexter”.

The show will air over twelve consecutive Sundays beginning February 17 at 10pm on CBS, and marks the first time a full season of a premium cable drama series has transitioned to broadcast TV.  Because the rules for broadcast TV are a bit stricter, the series will be cleaned up a bit and won’t be exactly the same as its Showtime broadcast.

The series’ executive producer, Daniel Cerone, said that he and the other writing producers on the show that are WGA members won’t be involved in the editing of “Dexter” for its run on CBS.  Overseeing the editing will be Showtime Networks’ president of entertainment, Robert Greenblatt, who says that most of the editing will be done for language:

“I am very protective of the show and will make sure the small changes are done very seamlessly. The essence of the show is absolutely there; we haven’t compromised the character and his moral compass,” he said.

The Parents Television Council is opposed to the show’s move to broadcast television, and has been protesting the move since December when it was first announced.  Senior director of programs Melissa Henson said, “..no editing in the world will make this palatable for families with small children.”  She’s exactly right, which is why it airs at 10pm on a Sunday night – a time when such small children should probably be sleeping and resting up for school Monday morning (if old enough to attend).  It’s not like they’re planning on airing it in the after school slot, so I don’t see at all what the problem is.

The show is also available for purchase at Apple iTunes, although right now there’s just the first season available. I’m hoping that they add the second season really soon!

It’s a good show, but I’m not sure I approve of censoring it just so it can be on network TV. Cable is where it’s at these days, and I see no reason to dumb it down just so it can follow the FCC’s arbitrary rules.

Changing Dexter to cbs is a tragedy. We will endure countless commercials and probably 15 min.less plot. The dialogue will be changed dramatically, for PC reasons, and the show will lose it’s effectiveness.
