Belgian actress Yolande Moreau stars as little-known but brilliant French painter Séraphine Louis (aka Séraphine de Senlis) who lived from 1864 to 1942.  On the face of it, she appeared to be a shepherdess and housekeeper whose primary duties involved cooking, cleaning, and ironing. However, in her off-time Séraphine joyously turned to the natural world and channeled these passions through painting by creating paints from elements such as animal blood, oil from church candles, and dirt out of sheer necessity.

With these raw materials, the budding artist created floral arrangements unlike any seen before. Unfortunately, those around Séraphine viewed the paintings as something of a joke. Her life took a fantastic turn when Wilhelm Uhde, a German art critic, arrived in Senlis and saw the young woman’s creations for the first time. Despite the success that Uhde imparted to Séraphine, a sad future accompanied by obscurity and emotional isolation lay ahead for the artist.  “Seraphine” is presented in French with English subtitles.
