So the word is that the string of Avengers-related movies (we started with Iron Man, and Thor’s in the works, with an Avengers movie to follow) is carrying on unabated with the Captain America movie to start filming this June.
A director has been announced, and it’s Joe Johnston of Wolfman fame, but the problem here is that there’s no one announced to grab the shield and take up the role of Cap himself. And they’d better hurry, because they’ve got a release date planned for it already, specifically, July 22, 2011.
Of course, what no one really mentions in the process is that this isn’t THE Captain America movie…this is A Captain America movie. The first Captain America movie was a spectacular flop. And if this one flops like the original did, it’s going to do SERIOUS damage to the rest of the chain on down the line. Marvel, and new parent company Disney, is counting on this to succeed.
And succeed it must. It has no other choice.
