Scorsese and the Stones to open BerlinaleJanuary 16th, 2008 in Celebs, Directors, Documentary, Festivals, Movie News, Movies |
Shine a Light, Martin Scorsese’s concert documentary on the Rolling Stones, will be the opening feature at the 58th Berlin International film festival, February 7. The footage was culled from concerts shot on October 29 and November 1, 2006, at New York City’s Beacon Theater. Included in the film will be performances by Jack White of the White Stripes, Christina Aguilera and Buddy Guy. There is an official website which suggests that the film may be in part about Martin Scorsese’s efforts at making this film. We will have to see if Scorsese is more successful at filming the Stones.  Hal Ashby’s Let’s Spend the Night Together, released in 1983, came and went. The Robert Frank documentary made in 1972, C***sucker Blues was suppressed by the Stones, although there are DVD-R versions to be found on the internet.  There is also Gimme Shelter by the Maysles Brothers, released in 1970, of the infamous concert at Altamont in 1968, where the activities off stage became the most dramatic part of that film.  Shine a Light is scheduled to be released internationally in April.

Don’t forget “Charlie is my Darling” (Peter Whitehead, 1966), the first full length documentary / movie about the Stones (and one the most interresting !).
