As first reported by Variety, Robert Rodriguez is now in line to direct a remake of the 1968 film, Barbarella, which starred Jane Fonda. Rodriguez will be directing the film for Universal Pictures with a 2008 release date in mind.

The latest incarnation of the film, however, will see a few changes. Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, the famed Casino Royale series writers, will be reworking the classic film to appeal to today’s audiences. Which is great, considering the original will be nearly 40 years old by the time this one is released.

The original Barbarella movie was an erotic science fiction film set in A.D. 40,000, and was based off the French Barbarella comic book by Jean-Claude Forest. The star of the movie was Barbarella (played by Jane Fonda), a young woman who has a number of exciting (and erotic) adventures while traveling around the galaxy. Think lots of futuristic voyages and situations, plus a lot of sex mixed in there. In other words, when this movie comes out, leave the kids at home.

Rodriguez was quoted saying, “I love this iconic character and all that she represents, and I’m truly excited by the challenge of inviting a new audience into her universe.”

So far, no word on who Rodriguez will cast in the role of Barbarella.

So does this mean Rodriguez will rejoin the Directors’ Guild in order to make the film for Universal? I saw the original “Barbarella” a couple of years after it was released, and it’s not even among Roger Vadim’s better films with or without Jane Fonda. Maybe I’ll see the DVD to see if it’s as bad as I remember it, although some of the costumes were interesting.

I’m pretty sure its as bad as you remember, Peter. I just remember being in awe of just how weird it was! Still, I’m looking forward to seeing Rodriguez direct it – I think the campy sci-fi erotica is right up his alley.
