Rhino and MST3K Make It a Dozen

As Screenhead’s official MST3K nut, I feel compelled to let you Parts: The Clonus Horror Posterknow that Rhino Home Video has just announced the next 4-disc set, their twelfth. I’m going to pretend that they read my article of DVD release suggestions and decided to incorporate them into their schedule, as one of the episodes is the fantastic Sci-Fi era episode Parts: The Clonus Horror, starring perennial Mystery Science favorite Peter Graves (who also starred in the fifth-season episode Beginning of the End and The Film Crew’s recent release, Killers from Outer Space).

Parts is infamous not only for sucking like an industrial vacuum cleaner, but for being remade into The Island without crediting the original creators. Allegedly. Personally, I prefer to remember it for the infamous “smoking crotch” scene, the hilarious escape scene (with Tom Servo making it sound like the protagonist is getting repeatedly shot and whimpering), some disturbing swim trunks, and the overall idiocy of the plot. Sure to be interesting is that DVD’s extra, an interview with Clonus director Robert Fiveson. Anyone want to make a bet he’ll mention The Island at least once?

The set features three other episodes, none of which were on my list of “most wanted,” but I just have to assume Rhino is taking their time. The other three are:

  • The Rebel Set (419), also featuring the short Johnny At The Fair, which was previously released as a part of Mr. B’sJoel and the Bots on MST3K Lost Shorts (released on DVD set 6). This disc features an interview with star Don Sullivan and this episode’s “MST Hour” wraps. (For a short period, MST3K was sold into syndication in hour-long segments, with new intros and outros featuring Mike Nelson dressed as “Jack Perkins.”)
  • Secret Agent Super Dragon (504), more spy movie fun in the vein of Operation 007 and Agent From H.A.R.M.
  • The Starfighters (612), of which the MST3K Review says, “never have I seen a movie more terrible, more hideous, more boring, and more repetitive than The Starfighters.” Wow. Fortunately, with MST3K, the worse the film, the better the episode. The review continues, “[The] riffs [are] so funny that they rival the riffing in The Beast of Yucca Flats, Santa Claus, and even The Final Sacrifice.”

The set also features the third volume of the “MST3K Jukebox,” which plays musical numbers from the show’s history. Look for the set to hit shelves on October 2. (Man, they’re really churning these out, aren’t they? Not that I’m complaining.) Retail is 60 bucks, but you can easily find it for less at certain retailers
