Rendition Trailer

On a darker note, Rendition is the second movie trailer I’ve seen today which grapples with the implications of a post 9/11 system. Directed by Gavin Hood (Tsotsi), the movie follows Isabella (Reese Witherspoon), who discovers her Egyptian-born husband has been whisked away to an overseas prison for a brutal interrogation.
Rendition doesn’t seem to take any shortcuts. Isabella comes into contact with an ensemble cast of characters, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Alan Arkin, Meryl Streep and Peter Sarsgaard and J.K. Simmons focused on either securing her husband’s release or, on the other hand, gathering information from him which could stop a terrorist bombing.
The movie meets a chilling moral impasse. Isabella’s husband is posssibly innocent and being brutally tortured, yet unable to provide answers about mysterious phone records which could be the key to stopping a series of violent attacks. In such a scernario, the implications of guilty until proven innocent could be revealed.
Rendition is of interest for another reason to film fans - director Gavin Hood has been tapped to direct Wolverine. Though I can’t speak for sure until the film comes out, Hood’s style seems perfectly pitched for the gritty corners of Wolverine’s Weapon X origins.
Rendition opens October 12th. Wolverine is slated for a 2009 release.
