Game and movie rentals are among the largest demanded items that people look for in the market today and apparently PowerPlay is trying to make the most out of that opportunity. In response, Movie Gallery and Hollywood Video are introducing PowerPlay(TM), a convenient movie and video game subscription service that offers the least expensive rentals in the industry, with no due dates or late fees.
PowerPlay makes it easy for customers to rent what they want, when they want it, from an enormous selection of titles – an experience that online services and kiosks just can’t provide.
“PowerPlay is the most significant in-store customer offering in the movie and game rental industry since the introduction of 5-day rentals in the late ’90’s,” said Clifford Torng, chief marketing officer, Movie Gallery, Inc. “Kiosks and online services have a place in our industry, but our new subscription service offers unprecedented pricing, convenience and selection that can only be delivered in-store. Many people still crave the immediate availability of the newest releases, or being able to choose just the right film from a wide selection and take it home right away.

New PowerPlay more expensive they should also offer the MVP since some of us don’t rent video games. The MVP was perfect Any movie you wanted up to 3 at a time then take them back get more. Now you get to mess with the point system. When mine expires I’ll going elsewhere, I have been with Hollywood for over 5 years…..

This new plan seems like a thinly veiled attempt at making more money at the expense of their customers. I’ll bet most of the customers on the MVP plan (like Melvin) will decide to leave Hollywood Video for better deals.

The decision to replace MVP with Powerplay was a corporate wide decision that was reached in response to the massive loss of revenue generated by MVP. It was a little too good of a deal, and we ended up paying the price for it on a grand scale. It was not “created to make more money at the expense of our customers”, it was created in the hopes of making more.
Had we continued down the road with MVP, the continued loss of money would have caused catastrophic consequences, especially now, with our economy in the crapper. Powerplay is at least giving us a shot to get back on the map… and the truth of it is, this program is better suited towards more casual renters, which is what a majority of our customers are.
As a Hollywood Video employee… I have to say, to all the people upset about this new plan, I guarantee you, we’re just as upset. We don’t like losing our valued customers over the loss of MVP, especially those we have grown personal relationships with. It’s almost like losing a family member, all for something we have absolutely no control over. As a consumer, I completely understand your frustrations, and can see that this isn’t as good of a deal as MVP was, but unfortunately… this is the way it’s going to be. We’re sorry to all customers who are upset, but we ask you to bear with us, and understand we know why you’re upset, and are right there with you.
In the end, we can’t force our customers to stay with us. If Blockbuster or Netflix works better for you, then by all means use them. Just understand, if you decide to leave, that we had no control over it and we’re just as upset as you are over losing our valued customers.

I will not be renewing my MVP eighter. Mark if what you say is true about losing money for the MVP program, then why not just be up front with all and rasie the price for MVP as an option. I was told by the local dealer here that we would automaticlly be rolled over to the Gold plan. That shoould not happen I’ve not signed up for powerplay and will not pay any additonal charges on the creditcard on record for the MVP.

PowerPlay Launches Movie Gallery and Hollywood Video Rentals…
We won’t attack an employee for defending a company that comes up with such a lame way of rewarding loyal customers. It’s true “the economy is in the crapper” but Hollywood Video will be to. It’s sad that Hollywood Video……

I’m happy Hollywood Video dropped the MVP plan.
Although I did use MVP for most of my needs, there were times I couldn’t wait to see a just released movie and paid the rental out of pocket.
But since MVP was dropped, I started looking for somewhere else to rent from.
It was then I found REDBOX.
ONE DOLLAR…..one night! Hundreds to choose from , including newly released titles.
If Hollywood Video still had MVP, I’d still be a customer and not realize what a great deal I was missing at REDBOX.
So…… Thanks Hollywood Video! ……….and a special thanks to the people who thought up PowerPlay.

We have been really happy with Hollywood video for years but will not be renewing our membership. If they kept MVP we would not be leaving them.

For those of you who are upset at Hollywood video over the mvp program,I understand.I too switch to redbox, but it was too expensive in the long run and there was still due dates. Not to mention ,if the disk has an issue, the computer has no compassion to replace your rental.
I then tried netflix, had to wait for my movies was in que for some that i never got,to top it off i saw less movies and more of the ones i didnt want to really see but had to fill my que.It just wasnt worth it to me,not to mention if there is an issue,i had to send it back and wait…grrr!
I went back to Hollywood, and even though i perfer mvp ,the new plan is still far better .I can pick the movies right there,no waitting,no late fees and the service is way better.Best thing i get discounts on pv movies and candy.
Maybe if everyone here put thier frustration over mvp away and looked at the value, you would see its less of a hassle..

Powerplay is still a better deal than renting your movies at full cost. So complaining to the associates will get you no where, there is an “MVP” program still instated it’s called the diamond pass which offers unlimited just like the MVP did!

When did the official switchover from MVP to PowerPlay take place?

hollywood video is doing powerplay because people who were on unlimited plans were getting their rentals for about $.50 each over a months payment period of MVP so they had to get rid of that because there is no money in it. they still offer the unlimited but at a dramatic price increase. also i think they are trying to get people to sign up using a credit card and then forget they have an auto payment coming out so they get “free money” in a sense. also i have heard that hollywood is trying to get away from movies and get more into the gaming industry since their game crazy is the only thing keeping them afloat. good move in my opinion

Look, ok it is the same as MVP, with added, Blu-Ray and games. Ok, so the Unlimited plan cost $10 more, but since you can get games too and blu-ray that is a great deal!! I love Hollywood Video way better blockbuster and Redbox does not have blu-ray or games, and I hate wating for movies and games in the mail. Plus,MVP was a Hollywood Video thing, before Movie Gallery bought Hollywood Video, sorry but new company new prices.
