Producers Guild of America has honored Avatar, An Education, District 9, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Invictus, Precious, Star Trek, Up and Up in the Air as nominees for its best picture award. PGA expanded its category to 10 like the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
I was hoping to see The Blind Side, Nine and A Serious Man in the list. Some of you might have thought of The Last Station, The Messenger and It’s Complicated. I guess, this is an indicator of a great year in film.
It appears to be no surprises in the nominations, which I am sure, will reflect in the Oscar nominations next month.
The PGA’s prize — the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award — has matched the Oscar Best Picture in 13 of its 20 years, embracing Slumdog Millionaire last year when the Danny Boyle directed movie took both.
Up received a dual nomination being, of course, included in the PGA’s animated category together with 9, Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Princess and the Frog. All of these stand out on their own as great films. I have a feeling Mr. Fox will triumph.
PGA will announce the winners January 24, 2009 at the Hollywood Palladium.
