Owen Wilson Drops Out of “Tropic Thunder”

August 28th, 2007 in Actors, Comedy, Movie News, Movies

owenwilson1.jpgJust two days after being hospitalized for slashing his wrists and downing some pills in a suicide attempt, actor Owen Wilson has announced his decision to drop out of the DreamWorks comedy, Tropic Thunder.

While Ben Stiller began shooting the film six weeks ago in Hawaii, Wilson wasn’t scheduled to begin his week-long shoot for another two to three weeks.  But the pair agreed that Wilson should probably hold off on this film, and came to the mutual decision to take Wilson off the project.

Stiller and Owens have made eight movies together in the past, so although it’s a bummer Wilson won’t be in this one, they’re sure to team up again in the future.  A source close to the project said “Ben and Owen have made eight movies together. And he can’t wait to work with Owen again. It’s just not going to be on this film.”

It is not yet clear whether Wilson’s role will be re-cast, or if it will just be eliminated from the film altogether. Tropic Thunder is also starring Jack Black, and is being produced by Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films.

Owen Wilson remains hospitalized at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he is reported to be in stable condition. It is probably best that he takes the time to recover, rather than rushing back into work without sorting out the things that are bothering him.

Reporting on Wilson’s wrist-slashing, pill-popping suicide attempt and following it up with “it’s a bummer” that he won’t be teaming up with Ben Stiller for the 9th time seems a bit irresponsible. I am not trying to be rude, but as a person who has experienced the suicides of two relatives, I find it to be a bit more than a bummer that these people aren’t in my life anymore. The “bummer” comment is the only one you make about the negative outcomes of this event. One positive outcome is that Wilson is still alive, and able to talk with his friends and family, let alone make movies. Even though I enjoy a lot of his work, I don’t care if he makes another movie ever, no matter who else is in it, as long as that means that he isn’t dead.
