Oscar Noms Announced: Who Should Win and Who Will Win?January 23rd, 2007 in Awards, Oscars |
Oscar noms were finally announced today, and there were a few surprises. Dreamgirls - widely expected to have a chance of winning Best Picture - wasn’t even nominated. Which is fair enough because it’s a load of old rubbish.
Leo DiCaprio failed to get a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role in The Departed, which is also fair enough because good as he was, he wasn’t a supporting actor. Shame on Warner Bros. for trying to convince anyone otherwise.
A shame that United 93 wasn’t nominated for Best Picture. Paul Greengrass’s film was more deserving than Little Miss Sunshine which was pleasant enough but not exactly life-changing. Greengrass does get a nod in the Best Director category though.

if Babel wins I’ll personally see to the death of every member of the Academy. Man, what an arrogant piece of half-baked trash. It’s so vague and undeveloped that people think it’s about profound things like communication. What junk. At least The Departed was mildly entertaining.
And there’s no way Ol Sneaky Pete is going to win.
And I’m delighted that Iwo Jima wasn’t in for foreign film, as foreign language as a category is a joke. It should be “foreign” by country of production/funding.

I take it you really liked “Letters”, Daryl. But which of the actual Foreign Language nominees do you think should win? At least this year’s slate is stronger than other years. I’m glad to see Deepa Mehta and Susanne Bier get nominated.

I think Marty will win director out of sympathy. “Sure, you made a great movie, but you should have won all those other times, sooooo here ya go.”

Listen buddy, i don’t know if you saw Blood Diamond, but Djimon Hounsou gives the best performance in a catagory that possesses the most depth (examples: Jack/Leo ‘departed’, Brad Pitt ‘babel not even nominated). If Eddie Murphy wins the Oscar -which i agree with you, he’ll likely win- it will be a huge mistake where 20 years down the road people will look back at Djimon Hounsou’s performance and say “how did he not win?”

I think Babel is “the movie”… it’s so different to other movies that I rented “Love’s a bitch” (amores perros or love dogs)… wow, another terrific movie from this director

The Departed is the best movie i have seen since Goodfellas my no 1 film of all time.Scorsese is a genius .The only people that seem to overlook this is the academy. Also, good as he was in Blood Diamond, DiCaprios performance in the Departed was incredible and more deserving of a nomination.Lastly how could Jack have been left out?

I haven’t heard any input about The Pursuit of Happyness. I felt that Will Smith portrayed Gardner’s struggle in a powerful performance. In addition, Forest Whitaker’s portrayal of Idi Amin was magnificent. Both actors are worthy of the best actor award. Still I must comment on Dreamgirls. I am not sure if Jennifer Hudson derserves this award. She did play her character well but, I’m not sure if her rendition of Holiday’s song merits an oscar.

Daryl, your prediction were just so WRONG! Babel best picture? Eddie Murphy??!! (and mark walberg did not deserve the oscar either). And the list goes on and on. Peter O Toole!!!? When Whitaker has swept with actor award in every other competition.
Jesus, you have to change your job man. You are no good at this one.

Perhaps you are interested in the German movie that won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film last night.
“The Lives of Others” portrays life in communist East Germany and focuses on the totalitarian powers of the secret police, whose stated goal was “to know everything.”
I have posted several reviews and the trailer with English subtitles on our blog and recommended a few more German movies, which are available in the US:
